Nate Oats from Buffalo.

Quote
Nate Oats, the 44-year old coach at Buffalo since 2015, will be the next coach of the Crimson Tide, athletics Greg Byrne announced Wednesday afternoon. Oats led Buffalo to the NCAA tournament each of the past two seasons with a 96-43 record in four seasons.

So far, so good.

Quote
“I have been watching Coach Oats for the last few years as he has led the University at Buffalo to unprecedented heights," Byrne said in a news release Wednesday afternoon. "His commitment to developing the student-athlete both on and off the court was what really stuck out. As we spoke to some of the best college and pro basketball minds in the country, his name came up time and time again.

More info on Coach Oats.

Quote
During the days immediately after Hurley announced his departure, Buffalo's athletic director at the time, Danny White, interviewed the team's players, all of whom advocated for Oats becoming the permanent head coach. Also, Hurley told White that he would hire Oats at Arizona State if White didn't hire him permanently. In a 2019 ESPN story on Oats, White recalled, "What stood out is the connections he had with our players. His reputation as a high school coach -- most people I asked said he ran it like a Division I college program. Players had a strong relationship with him.”

Well, well, well....  Byrne acted quickly and as quietly as he promised.  Gotta like that.  The credit or blame for this hire will all be on Byrne.

Coach Oats has his work cut out for him.  Hope he knows what he is getting into.

Meanwhile... let the 'oats' jokes begin:  Can't wait to see the headline... Bama Feeling Its Oats.

And more info.

Quote
This past year, Oats guided Buffalo to a 32-4 overall record and a 16-2 mark in conference play, leading the program to its second consecutive MAC regular season and tournament championships. The Bulls were ranked for 20 weeks in the Associated Press Top-25 throughout the 2019 season, which marked the first time in school history the program had earned a national ranking. Buffalo went on to climb as high as No. 14 in the nation which was the highest ranking by any MAC team in past 40 years. Additionally, the 32 victories not only set a program record, but was the most wins ever by any Mid-American men’s basketball program.

Quote
Over the last two seasons, Buffalo finished with a combined record of 59-13 (.819), a pair of MAC Tournament and regular season championships, two NCAA Tournament Round of 32 appearances and consecutive MAC Coach of the Year honors.

Better than a headline that says...”Bama Misses NCAA Tournament Again."

Well Coach Oats may have an idea about these players leaving and bringing in some good talent.

Well he looks excellent on paper.  I honestly didn't expect such a strong hire.

Hopefully some players decide to stay -- although the ones with bad attitudes might as well leave rather than poison the team.

Now we wait and see what he puts on the court.

Should I be looking for a buckle?

Some stats I like about Buffalo:
Ranked 17th in the nation in assist turnover ratio.
16th in assist per game.
22nd offense rebounds per game.
