So far, so good.  But they all look good the first year or so.  Only time will tell.  This guy does seem to have more facts/stats backing up the optimism than the last 2.

After so much failure for 25 years it’s hard not to get excited but we have to be patient and be open-minded on what he does in recruiting, development of players, and winning. I am very excited but I’m trying hard to control my enthusiasm to prevent a big letdown if things go bad.

Time to start a new poll:

How many years before MD starts a "Fire Oats" thread?

___  1

___  2

___  3

___ 4

___ 5

___ more than 5

___  never

You guys are just jealous because I call out the bad coaching before anyone else does. In the case of The Hermit (Grant) about 1 1/2 years before he was fired and with Gottfried (golf course guy) it was 2 1/2 years before his sorry rear end was fired. Are you implying we should have kept these overpaid losers another 2 or 3 years longer?

Some insight on how it went down:

Gotta say: Byrne's decisive.

Love the last quote from Oats:

"... work hard, that’s the American dream is it not? You work your tail off and good things happen to people that work hard.”

I wish a few million people in the USA understood that last sentence.

Great info on CNO, especially the clips on his working on plays with the players. Watch the videos.

Quote
But, enough with giddiness, let’s show what were so tickled about to begin with: the offense. I hate to give a nod to Auburn here, but you will see some similarities to what Bruce Pearl does. It is a high-paced motion offense that gets up the floor fast, with the offense fed by the transition and a high pressure defense — last season, the Bulls finished 21st in KenPom’s offensive efficiency and 31st in defensive efficiency.

And, in the half court, he emphasizes making an extra pass, quick decision-making, and passing up good looks in favor of great ones. So, even if it’s not a particularly good perimeter-shooting team, if the look is there, balls will be launched from all over the arc.

The style certainly works too. Despite the Bulls not being a particularly good 3-point shooting squad, Buffalo still launched 968 of them, 28.47 deep shots a game. That was good for 9th in the country, w averaging 85 points per game — 5th in the nation, and in the same exalted company as Gonzaga and UNC.

Gottfried made the NCAA Tournament 4 years in a row, his first four years at NC State.  He made it to the Sweet 16 twice, and the second round the other two times.

Might have been nice to see those results at Bama, instead of what Grant gave us over those years.

He inherited some major talent when he took over NC State. Plus, he was driven to prove Bama wrong which is a great motivator, but then he got complacent after time and relied on his own recruiting which got him fired. I think complacency & chasing coeds got him distracted at Bama. No way can you compare his first 4 years at NC State to his last 4 at Bama, which was very average. Plus, in 10 1/2 years he NEVER won a single SEC Tourney Championship, which is not acceptable if you are going to demand a winning SEC BB program. In fact, I think he played in only one SEC Championship which he lost to Misses State.

CAJ buyout info:

Quote
The former Alabama basketball coach will be paid a lump sum payment of $5.5 million to leave the job, according to a document obtained by AL.com through an open records request. Had he been fired outright, the buyout would have been $8 million.

Coach Nate Oats contract:

Quote
His five-year deal will pay $2.45 million a year including base salary and talent fees, according to the memo of understanding obtained by AL.com through an open records request. Former coach Avery Johnson got a raise to $2.9 million a year in 2017.

Quote
Other perks of the deal:

$12,000 annual expense account.
Two dealer vehicles for personal use.
A membership to North River Yacht Club paid for by the school. Oats would be responsible for any other expenses.
$225 a month for a cell phone stipend.
$5,000 annual athletic apparel allowance.

Moving expenses to relocate from Buffalo.
The school will pay for four round trips to Buffalo while his family relocates.

 Huh?

Those perks seem reasonable.

I thought about the cell phone perk for a second, then realized he has three daughters.

Seems a little over-the-top to me. He makes $2.45 mil a year but gets a $225 a month cell phone stipend. Same goes for the athletic gear allowance of $5000. Just seems goofy and unneeded.

First recruit for Oats at Bama.

Quote
Hawkins, a 6-foot-9, 225-pound three-star center from Nevada, committed to Alabama Saturday night.

Quote
While Hawkins is ranked just 175th nationally in the 247Sports Composite rankings, he’s rated as a four-star player and as the 88th-best prospect in this year’s recruiting class in 247′s individual rankings.

CNO offered this guy real quickly after being hired so he must think he's a good player.

Meanwhile, CNO is at work on recruiting.  Cecil's update:  Click here for link

Also.....MD....the wording in this al.com article implies that Bryan Hodgson is being hired as an ass't coach.  Has that been confirmed?  Cecil didn't say anything about it.
