Coach Rumph is getting the D focused

Quote
TUSCALOOSA – New Alabama defensive line coach Chris Rumph didn’t like what he was seeing from his unit when the Crimson Tide opened spring practice on Monday.

He stopped a drill, made the group do up-and-downs in place, then they repeated the drill.

Dont’a Hightower noticed Rumph’s actions.

“Sometimes you need a kick in the butt when you’re not doing the right thing,” the linebacker shrugged.

Hightower noticed something else, too.

“After the up-downs, I feel like things kind of changed,” the junior linebacker said. “Practice went a lot more smoothly, a lot more high-temp, a lot more intensity."

...

Hightower said it was good to be back on the field. He added it was even better to see a lot of familiar faces on defense. Last year, Alabama returned just two defensive starters.

“This defense is going to be back to what it needs to be,” Hightower declared. “It was a little tough last year having new faces. Lot of similar faces this year. Lot of guys came back for their senior year. It’ll help having a lot of veterans out there, lot more guys that know what’s going on.

“Then you’re going to have young guys that are going to be able to come up, step in and play. That’s going to push the older guys work harder so the younger guys don’t push them out of the way. It’s only going to help us.”

Our defense should be awesome this year. Good to see Coach Rumph making a statement at his first practice. Let's the players know what to expect from him. And, it seems they should expect hard work. Roll Tide!

That is spot on.

No one likes staff turnover, but the fact is that coaching is a stressful and demanding job.  The benefits of learning defensive coaching techniques, player development, recruiting, and organization management directly from CNS is likely one of the most rewarding opportunities available for aspiring Head coaches.

However, the high tempo environment which no doubt is extremely stressful, time consuming, and demanding (physically and mentally) wears on the staff and individuals as a whole.  Not all people are geared like CNS to sustain that lifestyle over a number of years.

That said, I think entering year 5 under CNS at Bama no doubt brought us to a stage of burnout for some coaches.  The changes offer great opportunities for new energy and ideas to flow into the organization and effect the overall energy of the team.

I am really excited about our additions and love all the early reports I've read on their immediate impact on the team and recruiting ops.
