It was reported on Thursday night Avery Johnson will no longer be the head coach of the Alabama Crimson Tide.

As of 10:00 CST, Thursday night there was no official news on Alabama basketball coach, Avery Johnson. No Alabama basketball beat reporters confirmed the rumors of Avery’s exit from the program until Michael Casagrande of al.com reported at 10:22 PM CST that Johnson is “negotiating a buyout for what would be a mutually agreed upon parting of ways.”

Many Alabama basketball fans are ready to move on from the Crimson Tide – Avery Johnson era. Moving on is appropriate but jokes about being buckled or unbuckled are not.

Avery Johnson did some good things while the Crimson Tide head coach. He proved top recruits can still be attracted to Tuscaloosa. His teams won some big games and while doing so packed Coleman. In many ways, he rekindled lost expectations for Alabama basketball to again be a solid SEC contender. He represented the University enthusiastically and with unquestioned character.

But on the court, the promise of a better basketball future did not materialize. The Alabama basketball program needed a change. Although he may not agree in the short term, a change is probably best for Avery as well.

The Avery Johnson era appears to be nearing an end at the University of Alabama.

The school and Johnson are currently negotiating a buyout for what would be a mutually agreed upon parting of ways, AL.com learned Thursday night. The discussions remain active a day after the Crimson Tide season ended in the NIT.

Well I guess this is a wait and see situation. Yes he represented Alabama with honor but you have to win games and go to the Big Dance also. RTR!

If we're lucky, maybe we can get Texas A&M's second choice.

Some Alabama basketball fans have been guessing about the Tide’s next head coach for weeks. Put all the suggested names together and the list would be a long one. But, only one list matters. That list is in the hands of Greg Byrne and we doubt it has been hastily thrown together over the last couple of days.

Many Tide fans believe Iowa State’s Steve Prohm is on the list. As an Alabama alumnus and former Alabama basketball, graduate assistant, Prohm would certainly understand the challenges and the opportunities in Tuscaloosa.

Other bigger names have been thrown around by fans. Some are improbable, as in Brad Stevens and Rick Pitino. Kelvin Sampson and Buzz Williams would be popular choices but Sampson has baggage and Williams may be leaving the ACC for College Station.

Thad Matta and Fred Hoiberg would be home run hires. Steve Wojciechowski would be considered by many as a home run hire as well. The former Duke standout and now Marquette head coach saw his team upset by Murray State in the NCAA Tournament first round, Thursday night.

Ironically, the team that upset Marquette was beaten by Avery Johnson’s Tide earlier this season.

Who is that?  And why not go after their 1st choice?

Time to cut through the muck and give some facts:

Kelvin Sampson: 63 years old, that’s not the future. Plus, he’s lost two jobs for NCAA violations. Excellent coach, though.

Rick Pitino:  66 years old and a lying sleaze ball.

Thad Matta;  51 years old but has had major back issues since having back surgery 10-12 years ago. He is an outstanding coach, but not physically able to do the job. A sad story for a really good coach.

Fred Hoiberg 46 years old:  Another outstanding coach while at Iowa State. Hired by NBA Bulls but fired earlier this year. Nebraska is getting ready to hire him.

Steve Wojciechowski 42 years old: Has been solid but not great at Marquette. In five years he’s been to NCAA twice in 5 years. Team has shown improvement each year.

Steve Prohm 44 years old:  Eight year heads coaching experience, 4 at Murray State, 4 at Iowa State. 83-52 (61.5%) with two Big 10 conference tournament championships. Currently, 6 seeding NCAA Tourney waiting to play Ohio State later tonight. Raised in Georgia, attended & graduated from Alabama.

Like I have said before, nothing is a sure bet when hiring a head coach for any sport.

Vandy has fired their head BB coach. Vandy has had a solid BB history & Nashville is sure more appealing than T-Town for most folks. We better not dilly dally too long.

I have no idea.  It's just a more attractive job than Alabama, so I don't think we're going to get their first choice.

The "negotiating buyout" story is all over the place, including ESPN.  I'm guessing the AD has a top candidate in mind.

I like the idea of Prohm because he is a Bama guy already.  I'm assuming he has some passion for his alma mater.  This team certainly needs a strong dose of passion!

He’s coaching his team in the NCAA Tourney so it might be a while before we know something. They play Ohio State tonight.

Well if it is Passion: Why not Pettway? He should deserve a try at it. RTR!

Valid point Preacher.  Antoine certainly played with passion.  I just don't know if hiring a 'first time' head coach would be a wise move.  Maybe though.
