This targeting thing is getting out of hand on other than QB's. This football and we was knocking heads in practice to get ready to knock heads in games. I don't understand this except the QB situation. RTR!
Didn't you say you landed on your head, Mr. Airborne?

Wednesday before the SECCG:

Junior Keaton Anderson, who stepped in for Jared Mayden ... was lined up with the first-team defense during individual drills.

There may not be much of a need for the dime package, which includes two extra defensive backs in place of linebackers for added pass coverage, unless Georgia tries and spread Alabama out...
[or we get ahead by 28 points!]

Terrell Lewis (knee) again practiced, and was wearing a brace.

Also wearing a knee brace was senior defensive end Isaiah Buggs (hyperextended).

There was no change on the offensive line, with sophomores Alex Leatherwood and Deonte Brown as the first-team guards, ahead of Joshua Casher and Lester Cotton Sr...

Heard on the radio today that there have been 179 targeting penalties this year.  Last season (2017) there were also 179 targeting penalties, exactly the same number (same week of play).

No word on how many replays dismissed erroneous calls.  But the number of targeting penalties is not higher, as it seems to most everyone.  And apparently we're not yet protecting players by reducing the number of hits (with just 2 data points).
There seem to be more reversals this year, but I might be wrong.   Huh?

I think you're right.  But I'm okay with them reviewing the hits to avoid any unwarranted punishment.

BTW, I also heard discussion of why "players must leave the field of play" after targeting.  It seems like ridicule and unnecessary parading of the accused (as they leave under escort).  The only reason they're forced to leave seems to be "to avoid any retaliation".  I doubt there's ever been any retaliation, and staying on the sidelines wouldn't likely affect the play going forward.

I thought about this the other day and came to the conclusion that it was to keep them from sneaking back into the game.

Maybe in 1935.  But no way that'd happen now.
It'd be easy enough for the player to return with a new jersey and play if that was the issue.

Tua gets a lot of credit, and deservedly so.  But those 5 guys are phenomenal as well.  Some DC somewhere better come up with a dollar bill package because a dime ain't gonna do it.  Maybe 10 DBs so they can all be double teamed and then a linebacker to spy Tua and try to handle the run game.

Saban presser Thursday:

Saban said there is not a level playing field in college football because some teams have to play a conference championship game and others — i.e. Notre Dame — don’t.

Saban said left guard Deonte Brown played well in his return from turf toe in the Iron Bowl and has developed nicely.

Saban said he has learned over the years that less is more when it comes to practice at this point in the season. “We cut back this week,” Saban said.

That’s insane.

That is indeed, insane. We will have all of them back again next year with the possible exception of Smitty, right?
