Title: ** MIDWEEK FOOTBALL CHIT-CHAT **

Loved this tidbit:

Last November, Auburn upset the Crimson Tide and won the SEC West. Auburn fans threw toilet paper in their trees and probably came up with some stupid name for the win. However, the moniker it will instead be remembered as is “The Iron Bowl That Didn’t Matter”. Alabama still went to the playoff and won the whole shebang. But wait! That game is the gift that keeps on giving. After the win and rumors of Arkansas trying to woo Gustavo Malzahn away from the west Georgia campus forced Aubie’s hand and they decided they could not live without him. Now they are stuck with the so-called quarterback guru/offensive genius, his big fat 7-year contract, and his $32 MILLION DOLLAR BUYOUT.

Once upon a time, Aubie quarterback Jarrett Stidham was trumpeted as a Heisman Trophy contender. On Saturday, he looked like another AU Heisman wannabe turned bust Jeremy Johnson, overthrowing wide open receivers on several occasions and producing only three field goals. The running game totaled 90 yards. But the blame is not all on Stidham. This offensive line is trash.

Is Alabama's offense scoring too quickly, thereby putting too much pressure on the defense?

Definitely the D is spending waaaay too much time on the field.  But DUH, wanna go back and take points off the board??

"Trust me, as an offensive player, sometimes it's even frustrating how fast we can score," tight end Hale Hentges said presumably with his tongue somewhere in cheek. "It's like, 'OK, let's get in a rhythm, let's get in a groove.' You throw a block and you're like, 'OK, that was one play.'"

I absolutely love how fast Bama is scoring this year. I would like to see the defense step up their game though. Has Cousin Tua even played in the 4th quarter this year?

Nope, Cousin Tua hasn't completed a 4th-quarter pass either!    :lol2:

It seemed good to have the D get so much experience.  Good until Diggs got injured!  Unfortunately our DBs have played the entire games, so we aren't getting much experience behind the starters.

Bulovas is missing FG's which scares me because will he miss a big one down the line to keep us from proceeding further? RTR!

Seems we keep getting kickers that are head cases.

Bulovas is capable; hope he gets it together.

I have NO IDEA how a college kicker can miss extra points.  There are MANY high schools that haven't missed kicks in several years.

Seriously, it's probably difficult to kick in college, because it has to be quick and the kick must be high.
But we used to take turns kicking field goals during high school football practice; just for fun.  My buddy was pretty good at kicking soccer style, even though our regular kicker was straight-on kicking.  It's just not that hard, especially straight on with a square-toed shoe.

Bama would be a 7-pt favorite if they played Ohio State this week, according to Danny Sheridan.

https://www.al.com/sports/index.ssf/2018/10/danny_sheridan_on_alabama-ohio.html#incart_river_index

And Danny added that Malzahn is a considerable underdog to not complete his seven-year contract that he signed in December.

Good ole Danny, stirring the pot.  :lol2:

Lots of talking heads on ESPN and SEC Network saying Georgia will cover, winning by 10 or more.  Maybe.  But LSU is fighting for their season this weekend, and the game's in Baton Rouge, albeit not night.  I'm expecting a real war.  You?
 :popcorn2:

BTW, UGA announced that DE David Marshall is doubtful for the game.  He's their best run stopper.  UGA's nose guard is also injured.

Yeah, seems like UGA has underachieved so far this year.  They've had injuries to their OL (ref in post above).  So, LSU may be catching them at a vulnerable time.  Still, with Coach O at the LSU helm, Kirby should win easily.

Yes, I almost posted the same thing earlier.  I don't expect LSU to score over 20, if they even get there.  13 may be more realistic for LSU, unless they get some NOTs.  But I don't expect Georgia to get out of the 20s either.

For sure this game will tell us whether Kirby's UGA can repeat as a powerhouse again.  Their young talent (FIVE 5-star players signed last year) will certainly contribute more as the season progresses.  And regardless of how LSU played against Fla, they'll play hard this week at home.

The Boogs may have checked out, but I doubt it.  Boogs have a way of cheating winning at home.  Expect them to get the refs they beeched about in Starkville to help them this week.

I think I posted several weeks ago that they are looking at a 7-5 type year.  Right now that looks like the best case scenario.  They already lost 2 games and looked horrible in the process.

Auburn still plays aTm, UGA, and Bama.  That's 3 more losses.  They will probably beat UT, but Ole Miss is a toss up.  So it is looking like 7-5 most likely for them, with a good chance of 6-6.

I have no idea why the idiots in the polls still have them ranked right now.  They are ranked 21 with aTm at 22 in both polls.  Totally absurd.  The same idiots have UK at 18 and 20 even though they just lost to aTm.  UK is probably about right but aTm is more like 10 to 15.  Auburn should not be ranked at all.

Just delicious watching the Boog meltdown, and how they blame Malzahn, Stidham, and the refs.
They need a mirror!!  At least the Toomers trees are safe!   :lol2:

Saban on if it's possible to prepare a team for fourth quarter adversity...

"Well, I mean it's impossible to create it if hasn't happened in a game. I think there's some things that we do in practice, especially always trying to practice situations, end-of-the-game situations -- need a field goal, need a touchdown, this much time's left, when do you clock the ball, when don't you clock the ball, how do you take the air out of it if you are ahead and it's a close game. So, we practice those things, but until you have to do it in a game, you never know quite how ready you are for it. It hasn't happened yet, but I'm sure it will happen at some point this season."

Hidden in the above response I mentioned the kickers must transition from using a block to kicking off the ground on FG/PAT's.  I remember Colt David going to a one inch block his Sr. year which made the transition easier.

They couldn't beat Rutgers right now, IMO. But maybe they will give the boogs a tussle.

I think Ga will beat LSU but it will be close. I think LSU used up all their luck in Lee County.

I just hope the QB-run plays are ripped from the playbook until needed, and whoever calls such plays is put in stocks.

Tua's knee:

No reports of him in a boot  :lol2:  yet, but the rumors are flying.  He was wearing a brace after the first half last week.  He's listed as "probable" in ESPN's Injury List, and MGM Grand pulled the Alabama-Mizzou line (presumably due to the injury; they do that).

But he's been practicing all week, according to CNS, so let's hope it isn't worthy of all the concern.

Good article from Thursday:
https://www.rollbamaroll.com/2018/10/11/17963456/previewing-alabama-vs-missouri-the-tiger-defense-crimson-tide-bama

Mizzou plays a straight-up, conventional style of defense with standard cover packages, but they can’t seem to stop any team that throws the ball well. They seemingly can’t stop even mediocre passing teams, as Purdue feasted on 572 yards passing in a loss to the Tigers earlier this year.  Purdue quarterback David Bough is no Tagovailoa, and the Boilermaker receivers can’t match the elite set of future NFL talents the Tide fields at the WR position. Bama’s recipe this weekend will be simple: They’ll need to do what they do best by taking the reins off Tua and letting him sling the ball to his cadre of targets while dissecting the opponent of the week through the air...

I hope our cadre of targets are healthy this week. We need SC's 49 at the half so Tua can sit out the 2nd half and rest that knee, providing we play any kind of D.

This could be a game where Jalen plays an important role.  If Mizzou's D is as porous as it sounds, then let Tua put some quick strike points on the board.  Then Jalen can come in and put up some grind-it-out points, running the clock and giving our D some rest.

I'd love to see Tua sit out the 2nd half but that may be wishful thinking.  Would be nice if Mac could QB the 4th qtr and at least run clock.

Our 1st team OL will need to play a lot in 2nd half to maintain possession.

This article is excellent explaining the Mizzou defense:
https://www.rollbamaroll.com/2018/10/11/17963456/previewing-alabama-vs-missouri-the-tiger-defense-crimson-tide-bama

They run a 4-3, and have senior LBs, so their strength is against the run.  We may have problems all day running on them, especially with Cotton slowed by a sprained ankle.

We'll likely make adjustments continuously to their schemes, and will need to pass for sure (not a bad adjustment this year).  Might be like the A&M game; tough running and occasional big gain on passes.

Saban said the injury hasn’t detracted from Tua’s reps in practice, but sprained knees only get better with rest.

Expect a heavy dose of Jalen Hurts today.

Here is clarification of what I posted yesterday:

"Cole Cubelic goes off on anonymous Auburn sources"
https://247sports.com/Article/Auburn-football-SEC-Network-Cole-Cubelic-rant-123215369/

Among the details were ... player gripes with Auburn Tigers starting quarterback Jarrett Stidham.

On Friday, SEC Network college football analyst and former Auburn player Cole Cubelic went on a rant during an appearance on The Paul Finebaum Show. In the diatribe, Cubelic took aim at players who may happen to share behind-the-scenes information about the locker room....

"But if you are the guy that it's OK to go to the media and slam your teammates to the media, and have defamation or character assassination to some of the teammates on your team that you share a locker room with, you're the problem on the Auburn football team...

I don't know who the source of all that information is, but whoever it is needs to be smoked out. And they need to find out, soon...

At Monday presser Saban was asked about Raekwon.
Saban said he'd talked with the Commissioner, and added "We are handling this in-house... I think Raekwon should miss some play in the future."

Expect to see Raekwon for only one half or not at all in Knoxville.

Also at the presser Saban said Tua hasn't missed any practice, implying he'll practice today.  Rumors were a torn miniscus and/or that Tua had it scoped yesterday.  No way he'd practice today if it'd been scoped.

But last week we heard Saban basically scolding the media about it, saying the same (Tua hasn't missed a snap in practice), then we all saw a frowning Tua wearing a big knee brace and dragging a leg.  One little bump on the grass and he's down for 5 minutes.

Fortunately, Mama Tua went into the medical tent, did some "laying on of hands", and Tua's back up and smiling (occasionally).  Never know, maybe Mama's got the power of Michael (the John Travolta one, not the Mexico Beach one):

The booger boards are saying the fix is in by the REC who controls the SEC office. Two weeks in a row our next opponent had one of their best players ejected in the 2nd half and will sit out the first half of our game. The REC must have more crooks than the DNC.

I thought Deonte Brown looked good in place of Cotton at LG. Deonta is an Austin and I have been pulling for him to become a starter. Based on his play yesterday he should get the start at LSU but I imagine practice the next two weeks will be intense at this position and will determine who starts.

Cotton came in on Hurts last drive and stayed in with the 2nd team line with Jones at QB. Cotton has won the starting job two years in a row but he is the only OL starter that has to worry about being replaced for non injury reasons.

James Carville will be on Finebaum this afternoon to address the "conspiracy and collusion between Alabama and SEC office."  They're convinced the refs threw LSU's best player (Devin White) out of the game to help Alabama win.

Caller recounts when "Howdy Doody, that Greg guy" (McElroy) was standing out of bounds and the photos showed it.

They're already whining, and the game is 2 weeks away!!

Yes, it probably is their best defensive player.  But he went high, made helmet-to-helmet contact on the QB, when he should know better.  That will get a call every time these days.

Ben from New Orleans:

"Alabama doesn't need any help, but over the years Alabama got away with holding and such.
Against Missouri an Alabama player starts punching... no personal foul, nothing... Saban is allowed to keep it in house.

Few years ago an Alabama player is caught with marijuana and a gun, gets off with a wrist slap...."

Finebaum says 'let's keep this to this year's activities'.

"Alabama player (Raekwon) slugging a Missouri player and gets 15 yards, and LSU player 'does nothing' and must sit out a game.  Why doesn't Alabama player sit out?"

ACTUALLY, JAMES, HE DID SIT OUT!!

Carville wants to know why SEC Office is in Birmingham.  "They all go to the same clubs with Alabama, hang out together, etc...  The office should be in Atlanta."

Carville is a nut!!

I'm a fan of Amari Cooper, and he was languishing at the Oakland Raiders -- the only team they've beaten so far this season is the Browns.

I used to be a Cowboys fan before Jerry Jones screwed it all up.  I lived in Dallas during the Cowboys' run in the early 90s.  But since moving back to Alabama, and watching JJ pretend to be a coaching genius, I've been rooting for the Falcons and Saints.  And I'm perfectly content watching the Cowboys lose.

================================

On LSU, I don't recall their fans claiming wide ranging conspiracies when LSU was winning.  Marcus Spears said the complaining fans sound weak, making excuses even before the game starts.

Just saw (on SEC Rant) where an LSU fan discussing Devin White's dismissal and the unruly crowd in Baton Rouge said, "Maybe Tua will get hit in the head with a Jim Beam bottle flying from the stands".

Some low-life, bottom feeders in Baton Rouge for sure.

Every fan base has their Cretans. LSU just has more of them.

If you read RANT you'll see LSU fans openly talking about peeing in balloons to throw at opposition fans.  My God, that's nasty.

Not just LSU fans have been calling Paul about the SEC and Refs being in the tank for Bama. UGA fans have called in, too. After the bad season Barn is having, they have quit calling Finebaum, afraid he might mock them or ask about Malzahn.

UCF fans were organizing a couple of busses to take fans/supporters up to Jacksonville to "take over" the Sports Center telecast this weekend.  Due to some "credible threats"  :eyeroll: from UF fans they have now cancelled said trip saying that since they will have children and older people the risk of getting hit with a glass bottle just isn't worth the risk.  Those UCF folks are more annoying than a sticky booger that you just can't seem to flick off.  They are currently 7-0 in the mighty American Athletic Conference.  They still have to play 6-1 Cincinnatti, 7-0 Temple, and 7-0 South Florida.  I hope they lose all three of those games just to shut them up for good...

You are probably right about that.  I just don't want them to even feel like they should be "in" this year though.  Even if Bama were to beat them 98-0 they would cry and whine that they coulda, shoulda, and woulda blah, blah, blah!  I'd just rather see Cincinnati, Temple and South Florida beat them down first...

Lowly Memphis had them down by 2 TDs two weeks ago, but lost 31-30.  Then last weekend Mizzou beat Memphis 65-33, and it wasn't that close.  That conference is a joke.

Never gonna happen -- UCF is a joke.  Ask Memphis.

For a while, odds were decent Bama might play ND in the first round, but everyone above them lost, so now they are No. 3 (or 2) looking to play Clemson.

Clemson has gotten stronger as the season has progressed. They would annihilate ND. At this point, I see it coming down to between Bama and Clemson yet again.

I agree.  Dabo switched QBs after seeing what Bama was doing with Tua.  He knew Clemson didn't have a chance otherwise, especially after last year's game.

Tuesday 10-30 practice:

Quarterback Jalen Hurts (high ankle sprain) looked like he was doing the same amount of work as Monday. He threw back and forth with Tua Tagovailoa during the drill where the quarterbacks are on their knees while throwing. Tagovailoa kneed like Monday, too. Hurts did not participate in the moving drills afterward. Instead, he was off to the side, passing with head trainer Jeff Allen.

Wide receiver DeVonta Smith (pulled hamstring) was going through drills again. He has been seen doing most stuff

As far as Jalen goes, I think that was the game plan going into this week. I haven't heard anything different about him playing. I think he is still on track to play.

Glad DeVonta is getting the reps. Let's hope he's 100%.

It's going to be a tough decision about playing Jalen.  High-ankle sprains are slow to heal, even with the magical cures of our medical staff.  But Tua doesn't need to chance injury if we're well ahead.  Maybe Mac Jones is ready for prime time.

So, 2 thinks it'll be a 4-quarter game.  Really?
It's over by midway of the 3rd (and the Cajuns leave in droves).   :lol3:

2 merely thinks the game might be too close to put in Mac Jones against LSU's defense.   :lol2:

With Jalen at less than 100%, we'll see more of Tua this game -- maybe into the 4th quarter.  Saban won't take a chance with Mac Jones before then.

INJURY UPDATE (Friday):

It seems like the expectation at this point is that wide receiver DeVonta Smith (hamstring) will be able to play against LSU on Saturday.

“Smitty’s practiced,” Saban said, “and I’m hopeful that he’ll be very close to 100 percent by game time.”

...
Backup quarterback Jalen Hurts, ... is still more of a question mark.

“Jalen was able to practice a little bit today, but he’s limited a little bit still,” Saban said. “But he’s getting well very rapidly now. He’s kind of turned the corner a little bit.”

Seriously, I wonder which he'd choose.
Lots of pressure to score on our first drive, so prolly better if we win the toss and defer.
Then we get the ball (after Waddle's return) on the LSU 15.

I think Bama gets the ball first.  Teams will want to start with their best squad on the field.  Bama will take the football.  LSU will defer.   8)

That might not be the best choice for LSU -- They'll struggle if they start out playing from behind.

Was talking with an LSU guy yesterday.  He teaches at Ole Miss; from Lafayette LA.  He and I were wondering which referees we'll get for this game.  Tough job.

He thinks they'll be intimidated by the crowd, the thrown bottles, threats, etc.   :lol2:

How far into the game before the LSU defensive backs are called for HOLDING or PASS INTERFERENCE? How that's called could change the game.

Look for a lot more body checking by the DBs at the line of scrimmage. I'm surprised the teams we've played to date haven't done more of it.

There will be a LOT of that by LSU.  That's why I expect the refs to counter with holding calls or PI.  If the refs let 'em play, it'll be tougher to get receivers open.

LSU is the first team that has DBs talented enough to check at the line and play man coverage.

Bama has seen mostly zone coverage this season, and Tua has picked it apart.

I'm not expecting LSU to play that way -- and they won't give Tua time to go through his progressions either.

So I'm not expecting to see many deep balls unless there is a blown coverage.  It will be more like when Tua played against Georgia, quick passes and drives requiring more than a few plays.

Don't make it too simple.  Just like us, LSU changes defenses with each play.
They'll play man more than most teams, with rotation left and right according to our sets, and they'll play some zone and switch coverage when they blitz.

Tua will have fun reading them.  Should be good to see Irv Smith running WIDE OPEN.   :lol2:

I wouldn't be surprised to see a lot of blitz packages from LSU.  They know they can't give Tua time to read his progressions. We can counter that with a quick slant.

What a disappointment. Apparently, when they get their a$$ handed to them, they don't show much of the game. Heck, there hasn't even been a Coach O sighting. They show talks with coaches and others about nothing, for the first 10 minutes. The next 10 minutes is LSU highlights. To get 10 minutes worth in, they had to show some good Bama plays.  :lol2:

It's been 25 of a 30 minute show and the only showing of Coach O was a piece of the post-game interview. He said, "Bearmuckee saka sturpel, Go Tahgahs!", and that was about it.

The SEC Insider, Road to the SECCG might have been better.  30 minute show, switching back and forth between Bama and Georgia games.  Not the same as watching the game, but different angles and insider conversing.

Tua:  "My knee kind of gave out at the end of the run.  You saw me looking around, because I didn't want to get caught."

Saban gets pissed at media about suggestion that we rest players this week.
https://alabama.rivals.com/news/injury-report-440

Alabama faces an FCS opponent this week in The Citadel. However, Saban insisted he has no plans of taking the Bulldogs lightly. When asked about injuries later in the news conference, Saban got heated, reiterating the importance of respecting every opponent his team faces.

"We're not going to take the approach in any game that we play that we're not going to play players and take guys out and do all this and play someone else and assume that the opponent that we're playing is not capable of being very competitive,” Saban said. “That can be your mindset. That's not mindset, that's not our mindset, that's not going to be the mindset of our players. And I'm not really interested in any of your suggestions about how we should manage our team and what we should do to get better, regardless of what you think, just because we're playing the Citadel.”

Jonah Williams explains our O-line blocking schemes.

HERE YA GO, PREACHER.  SEE WHY IT'S NOT AS SIMPLE AS BELIEVED.

https://www.al.com/alabamafootball/2018/11/pass-blocking-isnt-as-simple-as-it-seems-alabama-ol-explains-in-detailed-answer.html#incart_river_index

“There are some schematic things,” Williams continued, “for example, when they ran some cover eights where you have quarters of the field, half of the boundaries, you have a half safety, you have a trap corner playing seven yards off the line, and he was triggering fast on the runs, so when you’re running split inside runs you are short a guy. You want to be able to block him, so you either have a box blocker for him or you throw quick balls over the top."

This is likely the surgery that Jalen had.  Pretty cool explanation.
If so, the surgeon says he should be back 3-4 weeks from surgery.

Cecil Hurt on Saban's rant:

There is also mass psychology involved. When Saban bristles about questions that involve holding players out of particular games, he isn’t just being a curmudgeon (or an NFL throwback.) He’s trying to maintain a culture that took time to instill. The idea is that every game is important, just as every practice, every bench press, every meeting, every class.

Wednesday practice before The Citadel:

https://www.al.com/alabamafootball/2018/11/alabama-practice-report-notes-on-qbs-o-line.html

Backup QB Jalen Hurts (ankle) still looks very limited. He was moving gingerly during an early footwork drill and then when quarterbacks were throwing to the wide receivers. Tua Tagovailoa was practicing and looked fine.

It looked like left tackle Jonah Williams was off to the side during at least a portion of drills. It looked like Matt Womack was in at left tackle with the first-team offensive line at that point.....

Looks like the O-line has 2 injuries to tackles, unless Deonte Brown is mysteriously healed by Tua's Mom.   :dunno:

On Josh Jacobs running the wildcat:
“As long as Josh Jacobs does what he’s supposed to do, I will like what he’s doing,” Saban explained. “As soon as he messes it up, I won’t like it. So, I’m not really making a commitment one way or the other.”
That drew laughs.
“I like it when it works and I don’t like it when it doesn’t work,” he continued.

More about injuries to Damien, Thompson, and Leatherwood:

Harris was slow to get up after a 73-yard run, but after members of the training staff attended to him, he was able to jog off under his own power. The senior rushed for 83 yards on seven carries.

Thompson came up limping in the fourth quarter and left the game in pain. The redshirt junior recorded eight tackles and forced a fumble that resulted in a touchdown for Anfernee Jennings. Thompson was replaced at safety by redshirt junior Keaton Anderson.

Leatherwood went to the locker room in the third quarter and was replaced by Joshua Casher.

“It was good,” said Alabama quarterback Tua Tagovailoa of Casher getting to play. “I mean, it’s nothing where you look at it like, ‘Oh, wow. Josh is in.’ It’s next man up if someone gets hurt, and you roll from there. I’m happy he got the opportunity today.”

Saban "Ask Coach" on Wednesday:

Senior Day Saturday (most all seniors have already graduated).

Lots of rain, so worked on the field and discussed techniques to avoid slipping (as players did against Citadel).

Life-lessons discussion about the players.

Hard to stay focused every game.  Some players can't stay focused every game.  General "rat poison" discussion.

Saban likes the traditional Thanksgiving Day food.

Well, every sprain isn't the same.  Hopefully Deonte can wear the support shoe and be back to normal soon.  After all, we don't need him for run plays as much as passing, which should be easier on his turf-toe injury.

Hopefully.

Nebraska v Iowa on TV this morning.  Tuned in just before halftime to see Barret Pickering kick a 46 yard FG for Nebraska.  Apparently this Freshman FG kicker from Birmingham, Alabama (Hoover H.S.) has now made 10 FGs in a row and is becoming somewhat of a local celebrity in Nebraska, especially after kicking 3 FGs in the snow to lead Nebraska to a 9-6 win over Michigan State.  He had scholarship offers from Nebraska, Vandy and Tulane and went with Nebraska.  (His long FG is 47 yards, and it appears he is good for FGs inside of 50 yards.)

Tua has the highest QBR rating ever at 212.54

Tua has the highest QBR rating ever at 212.54

Tua is also the ONLY QB in FBS history to have 36 TD's with 2 or fewer INT's

Barret Pickering kick a 46 yard FG for Nebraska.

Sooooo...., you're hinting that we screwed the pooch on this recruit??

I don't think Bama "screwed the pooch."  Kid still needed to develop.  But maybe he has an aunt, cousin, or other family member who is feeling sickly, and he needs a hardship waiver to transfer closer to home.   ;)

Mack Bron coached at NC in the late 80s well into the 90s before he got the Texas job.  This is probably close to the 30th anniversary of when he first coached at NC.  At least we won't have to see him on TV much anymore.   :lol2:

Practice Monday before SECCG:
https://www.al.com/alabamafootball/2018/11/alabama-olb-terrell-lewis-returns-to-practice.html#incart_river_index

Injured Alabama linebacker Terrell Lewis (ACL) was back at practice Monday as the Crimson Tide started its on-field preparation for No. 5 Georgia and the 2018 SEC Championship Game.

The junior was fourth in line in individual drills in the indoor facility and had a brace on his right knee.

I don’t know enough about the mechanics and rules of football to know if it was legal or not, I just know I saw a guy dive to the ground as soon as the ball was snapped. What else is he going to do but hit someone in the knees or feet at great risk of injury?

https://www.al.com/alabamafootball/2018/11/alabama-practice-report-notes-on-terrell-lewis-isaiah-buggs.html

-- Terrell Lewis was again out there practicing with the outside linebackers. He was in a crimson jersey signifying full-contact clearance ... A large brace provided protection on his injured knee. It’s ... not clear if he will be playing Saturday against Georgia.

-- Defensive lineman Isaiah Buggs was practicing after hyperextending his knee against Auburn. There wasn’t a good view ... but he looked to be participating in a crimson jersey.

Heard on the radio today that there have been 179 targeting penalties this year.  Last season (2017) there were also 179 targeting penalties, exactly the same number (same week of play).

No word on how many replays dismissed erroneous calls.  But the number of targeting penalties is not higher, as it seems to most everyone.  And apparently we're not yet protecting players by reducing the number of hits (with just 2 data points).

I think you're right.  But I'm okay with them reviewing the hits to avoid any unwarranted punishment.

BTW, I also heard discussion of why "players must leave the field of play" after targeting.  It seems like ridicule and unnecessary parading of the accused (as they leave under escort).  The only reason they're forced to leave seems to be "to avoid any retaliation".  I doubt there's ever been any retaliation, and staying on the sidelines wouldn't likely affect the play going forward.

Wednesday before the SECCG:

https://collegesportsmaven.io/alabama/bamacentral/practice-report-keaton-anderson-working-in-dime-package-J40WmgqW70uFR5f3QcxYeQ/

Junior Keaton Anderson, who stepped in for Jared Mayden ... was lined up with the first-team defense during individual drills.

There may not be much of a need for the dime package, which includes two extra defensive backs in place of linebackers for added pass coverage, unless Georgia tries and spread Alabama out...
[or we get ahead by 28 points!]  :lol2:

Terrell Lewis (knee) again practiced, and was wearing a brace.

Also wearing a knee brace was senior defensive end Isaiah Buggs (hyperextended).

There was no change on the offensive line, with sophomores Alex Leatherwood and Deonte Brown as the first-team guards, ahead of Joshua Casher and Lester Cotton Sr...

Tua gets a lot of credit, and deservedly so.  But those 5 guys are phenomenal as well.  Some DC somewhere better come up with a dollar bill package because a dime ain't gonna do it.  Maybe 10 DBs so they can all be double teamed and then a linebacker to spy Tua and try to handle the run game.  :lol2:

Saban presser Thursday:

https://www.al.com/alabamafootball/2018/11/live-updates-nick-saban-hits-airwaves-to-talk-sec-title-game.html#incart_river_index

Saban said there is not a level playing field in college football because some teams have to play a conference championship game and others — i.e. Notre Dame — don’t.

Saban said left guard Deonte Brown played well in his return from turf toe in the Iron Bowl and has developed nicely.

Saban said he has learned over the years that less is more when it comes to practice at this point in the season. “We cut back this week,” Saban said.

That’s insane.

That is indeed, insane. We will have all of them back again next year with the possible exception of Smitty, right?

Irv is a junior. He might go - Walter Football has him going to the Patriots at the end of the first round.

The rest are back unless they transfer. But they’re not going to find a better QB to throw to them, so that’s unlikely.

Friday before SECCG practice:

Josh Jacobs has the flu!  At least it seemed so on Friday morning.

Preacher, do your magic!!

Jacobs was out there with the team and dressed for practice, but you could tell he wasn’t feeling great. At one point he jogged off the field and leaned on one of the benches for a moment to gather himself.

"Flu-like symptoms"

My daughter and some of her HS friends have had walking pneumonia this week. (Fortunately it hasn't infected anyone else in our house.)  Maybe that is going around?

That's right.  Najee will have to be tougher in pass blocking schemes.  We know he can run the ball.

He was going on and on about Bama's secondary being "trash" and that Oklahoma will hang at least 50 on Bama, and will beat them. He used to give Bama props, but he is so butthurt with them winning all the time, it's hilarious to hear him rant on and on about something he has no clue about.

Outside linebacker, Terrell Lewis is no longer doubtful for the Oklahoma game. Lewis will not play against the Sooners but he has not completely ruled out playing in a national championship game. Wondering where the good news is Tide fans? Lewis said Thursday he will return to the Crimson Tide next season rather than turning pro.

My guess is they failed a mandatory drug test. All NCAA Championships (Playoffs, Tournaments) require drug tests. Clemson came out and said their guys failed due to banned performance enhancing drugs. We just said violation of team rules. Per the NCAA website failed drug tests carry a one year suspension. CNS said they were out for the rest of the season and possibly more. Banned PED's and street drugs carry the same penalty.

He had a punishing game, so maybe he was getting treatment and a day of rest.

 :dunno:
