A review of the game video by Tennessee State's coaches showed that middle linebacker Christion Abercrombie was injured on a routine play in Saturday's game against Vanderbilt.

Abercrombie was able to make his way to the sideline after the play. He complained to trainers about having a headache and collapsed soon after.

The Atlanta native was rushed to Vanderbilt Medical Center where he underwent emergency surgery. He is currently listed in critical condition.

"It was just a football play," Reed said Sunday morning on his coaches radio show on WNSR 560-AM/95.9-FM. "He was taking on a block and it wasn't anything malicious or dirty or anything like that. Just an unfortunate situation."

Monday update:

Tennessee State linebacker Christion Abercrombie has been fighting for his life at a hospital since he left Saturday’s game against Vanderbilt with a traumatic head injury, and positive updates about his health have been difficult to come by.

According to ... the swelling in Abercrombie’s brain has reduced since he underwent emergency surgery on Saturday.

Some good news at last.

With a head injury, the damage isn't done just with the initial impact.  It is when the brain swells as a result of the impact and pushes against the skull.  Surgery often entails removing the hematoma/contusion and allowing the swelling in the brain to subside. The flap of skull removed during surgery may or may not be replaced (immediately) depending on the swelling.

The fact that the swelling is going down is a good sign.

Georgia HS Student Dylan Thomas (named after the Welsh poet?) died from a head injury this past weekend.  Click here for link

Wednesday update:

Christion's uncle says "he's improving", but gave no details.
There was a prayer vigil for Christion Tuesday at TSU.
Waiting for a medical report.  Sounds like his survival is still in doubt.

Probably the issue is how much he will improve -- will he regain full muscle control and be able to walk/run, will he be able to talk and remember words -- and how long will it take for him to recover.  This could be a long process.   Pray

I'm sure I missed it but what exactly happens? Helmet on helmet? Or, something else?

Nobody seems to know.
His coaches said they reviewed the game film and could see no specific hit that led to his injury.  Christion walked to the sidelines complaining of headache, then collapsed.  He never regained consciousness.
