It's painful to read articles about the young ones dying unnecessarily at such an early age. For these young men to achieve those lofty goals of theirs, they put themselves under tremendous pressure trying to be bigger, stronger, faster, and better than the other atheletes. When I see these young men all muscled up and strong as a bull, all I can think of is some type of enhancers made this him look this way and be that strong.  


I think at that age they are prime to grow. Great facilities, strength coaches, along with nutritionist, and dieticians certainly help a lot. If the person has the genetics and the work ethic, they can do it without PEDs. Legal supplements are helpful a little risky, they are made int he same labs as the not so legal ones, and come easily become tainted. There are some out there that certified 100% clean, but they are few and far between.

I just can't comprehend these types of things. Why do young people want to use drugs KNOWING it's harmful, not to mention illegal. How can a 21 year old be depressed when he has his whole future in front of him? Very sad. Makes me want to hug my 19 year old son even more.

MD you are so right. Loving them all you can and they still find a way to falter sometimes. I just pray God will be with our kids and grand-kids. RTR!

Remember depression is a disease, just like many, it is treatable, but not curable. It is many times caused by chemical imbalances in the brain, such as serotonin, dopamine, and many others. Sadness is an emotion, and is caused by outside stressors, like what we believe our future may hold for us. Now what may cause these limes to blur sometimes, is the body reacting to stress and releasing certain chemicals, or preventing the release of others. Now I have no idea what Mr. Douglas' life was about. Maybe both parents being athletes at UT put a large level of stress on him. It is a very sad situation, indeed. Now, which scripts were his, and which were not, I have no idea about that either.

The kid obviously suffered from addiction.  There were plenty of methodone kids in treatment.  Apparently there is an entire market of people who get it legally and then resell it.  The ones that live to make it to treatment will tell you that you cant take methodone with xanax or valium, you will die.  They all have a few stories of friends who died that way.  Same thing with oxycotin and xanax.

More people in treatment are there for pills than anything else, by far.

The biggest part of the problem are doctors hand out pain medication like it's candy. I can't tell you how many pills I have thrown away because a physician wrote me a prescription for 30 pills for pain. I had major back surgery a few years back and I was given hydrocodone for 30 DAYS with the ability to get 60 more! I took 3 pills the first 3 days and that was it. I've had root canal surgery and been given 30 days of tylenol #3 (codeine, I think) for pain. I had outpatient surgery 3 years ago and again received a prescription, hydrocordone or vicodone. It's ridiculous. What I have heard is teenagers simply go through their parents or grandparents medicine cabinets then either sell or use any presribed medications they find.

This is why I am adverse to taking any medication if I can help it. I realize there are many drugs out there that are helpful, but I would just assume not have to use any at all if I can help it. I have frequent headaches and I HATE taking even ibuprofen for them, but when they get to the point of not being able to handle the pain anymore, I will take a couple.

   They do. And another thing, which thank goodness is waning in popularity,  is kids will have pill parties. They will go through their parents' medicine cabinets and swipe drugs. They will show up at parties, and all the kids with drugs will dump the pills into one large bowl.  Then they will play different games where they wind up eating 3-4 pills at a time out of the bowl. THEY HAVE NO IDEA WHAT PILLS OR WHAT MIX OF PILLS THEY ARE TAKING!!!

Joking aside, I have found (JMO) that aspirin works better than the opiates, if you need quick relief. The pain pills may work better if you take them long enough for your system to get "saturated" in the medicine.

I have a doctor buddy. We fish, ski together and the woman is friends with his woman. Anyway, he has drawn considerable criticism over the years for over prescribing pain medication. His answer satisfied me. He said that we live in an area where most men make a living with their hands/back. Logging and saw mill work is the leading employment by a mile,-- next comes the school board.

When an injured worker comes into the doctors office, he is limited to the extent of evalution/treatment. Sending him to another doctor or hospital for further triage or treatment is the best this doctor  can do. A large percentage of the time the patients treatment or evaluation ends there. The expense (no insurance) of xrays or MRIs will limit any follow up care. The logistics of driving (or finding a ride) 3-4 hours to a real hospital plays into the decion, also. So the doctors choice at that time is to make the suffering patient as comfortable as possible. Hence, the pain pills. Maybe using a worker as an example is not a great example, since workman's comp is available, but y'all still follow my point. Most guys would rather go home and suffer than drive 4 hours (8 roundtrip), sit in a crowded waiting room all day, just to be told to come back on Thursday for an MRI.

I have no problems with people who are in pain getting the proper pain meds.  I am all for it. And will administer it in a heart beat if I feel if a patient needs it. But from soccer mom's eating their kid's Ritalin, to older patients taking so much Oxy's that they are mistaken for stroke patients, ( think i shared that story on here a little while back), and then kids raiding mom and dad's medicine cabinet...not to mention the latest involving Coricidin Cough and Cold ( not even a script med) and "Purpa Drank" it's unreal what's going on. And the general public has no clue.

Someone, somewhere told me months ago that pill makers were adding a dye to the pain pills. The idea being is that if a recreational user tried to sniff/snort the medicine, it would stain his/her nostril area like the finger of an Iraqi on election day. Never heard any more about it.

Also I think a big stink has been raised about Oxy (can't begin to pronounce it so spelling the whole name is only a fantasy of mine). Seems oxy is the most powerful and the final step in the life of the stage 4 crowd. So when it hits the streets, more danger and tragic outcomes result. But patients with real needs aren't just handed this Oxy, but he graduated up from milder pain medication, to medium mild, and then the big cahona. So what would make anyone seem like a drolling zombie, is not, in the case of a patient that has come up through the pain pill ranks.
