I wonder who did this one? This an everyday occurrence and the only thing stopping it here is others be armed. If we ever want to stop terrorists we need to rub them in hog guts when they are killed that will stop all muslims from killing others. RTR!

At least 60 dead from what appears to be a terrorist attack in Nice, France. Prayers for the afflicted.  Pray

I sure hope Chech wasn't there.

Naw, we're in Switzerland.  Didn't even know about it until I read it here -- thanks.

The Audie Murphy tour was great.  Visited a museum near where he won his MOH; full of all sorts of weapons and such from the battlefields around there.  I especially enjoyed seeing the knives, many German knives not usually seen on battlefields (pocket knives, hunting knives, even champagne knives), but what the soldiers carried.  The nice French lady at the museum allowed me to inspect several pieces closely by opening the cases: Puma hunting knife, Prussian horseman's knife, Solingen short sword with stag handles).  Then we stood atop a small mountain (huge hill) overlooking the battlefield where an American memorial is located.  There a very young Lieutenant Murphy stood and planned the attack on the villages where Himmler had stationed his troops.  Weeks of battle followed.  Just cool to be there.  The place where Murphy won the medal is a simple wooded area about quarter mile from a small village.  Even though privately owned property, it's as it was back in 1945.  From modest tree cover at the edge of a field of snow, Murphy held off the Germans for 90 minutes by himself.  At the same time he called in artillery on his own position, which the artillerymen refused to do.  The tank he stood atop was burning, and later when asked "Wasn't it hot?", Murphy answered: "First time my feet had been warm in 3 days."

Home in a couple of days.  Thanks for your concerns about our safety.

Good morning folks.  Safe travels Chech.  Man, I would love to have me one of those Solingen short sword with stag handles.  I bet that thing was a beauty... Applause E-Cred

That's the kind of history I'm fascinated by. Thanks for sharing, Chech. I bet you were in hog Heaven looking at those knives!

CNS and PF are playing golf together?  I bet PF keeps the caddy between him and CNS to keep from getting a shaft wrapped around his neck...

Good morning.  Coffee

Finally home.  Here are some pics:

View from Audie Murphy's position from atop a burning tank.  Of course, it was January with 3' of snow when Lieutenant Murphy was there.  The Germans were attacking from the town of Holtzwihr (straight ahead), so his view was from this road just inside a forested area.

Audie Murphy memorial.

Approach to the memorial.  The town is behind us; Murphy's position was at the edge of the woods ahead.

Storks atop WWII ruins left as a memorial in Osteheim, France.  Storks are common in this region.

Osteheim during the battle.  Note the stork nest atop the tower at right!!

Poster outside the Colmar Pocket Museum in Turckheim (France), just a few miles from Osteheim and Holtzwihr.

Helmet from Audie Murphy's unit; found on the battlefield.

Town of Turckheim today.  It was leveled during the battles of WWII, even before Audie Murphy got there.  This photo shows the moat surrounding the town (dry today and during WWII).

Bridge over Rhine in Strasbourg (France).  The plan by Hitler, which led to the Colmar Pocket battles, was to capture Strasbourg.

French troops on streets of Strasbourg.

Strasbourg flowers along bridges.  Canals flow through Strasbourg, and are adorned with flowers.

Heidelberg.  American soldiers and friends in a pub: Red Ox (where we had lunch at this same table).  Mark Twain, Eisenhower, and Marilyn Monroe also had visited the Red Ox.  The tables were carved with names and dates of German fraternity boys, most dating 1928-1936.  The Red Ox was established in 1703.

Kinderdijk, Netherlands.  Windmill built in 1700s; still functional.  There are 19 of them in this little town.

Railroad bridge in the Black Forest.  We hiked into the forest along a stream; remarkably similar to Appalachian forests: moss-covered rocks; ferns everywhere; babbling brooks; evergreens and maples.
