If you didn't root against the Braves in my Dad's house, you didn't eat.  I like to eat.  Dad watches every Braves game and roots against them.

The Braves are the Auburn of MLB.

Why so much hate for the Braves, HL?

Well, my Dad has been a Dodgers fan since he started following baseball in the late 50s.  They used to be NL West rivals before expansion and reorganization into 3 divisions.  But you know how it is...being a fan of one team and being constantly annoyed by fans of another team that you're around.  I guess that's what did it for him.

Same thing happened to me.  I was the world's biggest baseball fan growing up (could quote stats at age 6-7) in the mid/late eighties.  We would go to Atlanta anytime the Dodgers were in town, and we could get seats 15 rows behind the visiting dugout without problem.  Fast forward to the early 90s and the Braves run...suddenly people I'd been around for years who never showed any interest in the Braves were "huge fans."  It just turned my stomach to see such a fair weather (or maybe just "Johnny Come Lately") fanbase.

How sickening would it be to see Bryant Denny 30% full just because we have a few bad years?

After we blew two against you guys, now we're doing your heavy lifting for you by sweeping the Nats.

Typical Braves luck...

Also, judging by the Pirates defensive play, it appears they're trying to hand you that series on a silver platter as well.

We'll take what we can get. Your Dodgers should run away with the west. Maybe we can meet after the regular season also. Would be a good series if both teams continue to play well.

Your reasoning for hating the Braves is really illogical. First of all, the Braves didn't have a "few" bad years. From 1970 till 1991, the Braves probably had MAYBE 4 decent teams. The 1974 team won 88 games and the 1982 team won the division. That's about the extent of the Braves having a decent team. Most of the time, they stunk. Several years they were the worst or one of the worst teams in all of baseball. This was especially true starting around 1976 thru 1980, then again starting around 1984 till 1991. If Alabama had gone 15-20 years, with teams mostly going 5-7, 4-8, 2-10 during the season, do you really think the stadium would be sold out? The answer is no. Plus baseball is 162 games, not 12, which menas you have to win and play good over a long stretch of games. What was killing the Braves was when Turner bought them, the team was poor and the farm system was totally dry. It took years to rebild the entire organization. When Turner bought the team in 1976, they had FOUR scouts for the entire organization. They ended up with over 40 scouts under Turner. By the way, I was one of those folks in the stands when they would have 10,000 fans present.

@Marshal Matt - A mass uprising of new fans of an opposing team is always annoying.  Similar to what happened in north Alabama in the mid/late 90s during Tennessee's good run.  Moreover, that the Braves were an NL West rival at the time I started following baseball was plenty enough of a logical/rightful reason to hate them.  The fans were just what broke the camel's back.

But alas, we're all licking our wounds today.  Dodgers went down to the Rockies 6-2 last night.

Kiss  A healthy rivalry, replete with good-natured banter, is always welcome to a fan.

Don't know if you are old enough to know this, but in the early 1980's, the Braves & Dodgers were a HOT rivalry. In 1982, the Braves beat the Dodgers by one game to win the division. In 1983, the Dodgers won the division by 3 games. They really went at each other, even had beanballs and bench-clearing fights and I HATED the Dodgers. It was so fun to watch.

Quote
Chipper Jones' bad left knee has limited his playing time at the start of his final season, so he says it's important to make the most of his chances.

"When I am in there, I want to make a splash," Jones said. "I did it tonight."

Jones hit a two-run homer in the 11th inning and the Atlanta Braves overcame Carlos Ruiz's seven RBIs to outlast the Philadelphia Phillies 15-13 on Wednesday night....
