Something people don't seem to realize about basketball in Alabama is that our team in general is only going to be as good as the in state talent.  Bama can't go out and get recruits from all over the country like in football so they rely heavily on basketball in state being good and keeping kids home.  Getting Releford was a RARE find and get for Bama.  You look at the gottdouche teams that had success and they came from in state players.  He came in at just the right time when there were a lot of really good in state kids and he got them all.  Until Bama can go out of state on a regular basis AND keep the top in state talent at home, you won't see them having wild success in hoops.

I remember on TS you assured us that if Bama fired Gottfried they would be a powerhouse every year.

Currently, Bama's basketball roster has 5/13 players from the State of Alabama, with the other 8 players from somewhere else.

During Bama's Elite 8 run in 2003-4, Bama had 8/15 Bama players on the roster.

Uh, no. You are mistaken.  Bama will never be a powerhouse in B'ball.  I may have said if they get the right coach they can be competetive every year.

And of the starters or those who made meaningful contributions most of them were from Alabama.  The "stars" of that team if you wish.

most of them, yeah.  I think Grant recruits better out of state than Gottfried did, so this might have changed somewhat.  But Bama Bball is never going to have the recruiting pull of a Duke or Kentucky.

Looks like two of those players were never born.  Were they hatched or something?

3 starters from Alabama, 2 not.  I get what the OP was saying, but we can get kids from anywhere, esp Ala, Miss, Ga, TN.  We aren't limited to this state.

I think we have proved we can recruit Alabama, Mississippi, Tennessee, Georgia, & Florida. That's a pretty good recruiting area of around 40 million folks. Plus, we might be able to steal one from BB states Kansas, Kentucky, North Carolina, or Indiana  from time to time.

It's way too early to predict what CAG can do and can not do. Next year will be his first year with an experienced team and then I think we will see how well he can coach. As far as recruiting that's to be seen so far but I will say I think his recruits up to now have proven to be decent basketball players. Recognition is the key to recruiting and getting quality players and winning ballgames has everything to do with recognition. I thinK CAG is well on his way to getting that necessary recognition.    Not only can UA Basketball recruit form out of state, they can recruit internationally as well.

I'm talking about your 4 and 5 * type. Sure they can get 1 and 2 * players from out of state nobody wants.  They need to be able to go to other states and get those high quality players.  Who cares if they pull a guy form 5 states over if the guy sucks and rides the pine?

You are overgeneralizing trying to make an invalid point.  Some of the best players to ever play basketball at Bama in the last few decades were not from Alabama, including:

Mo Williams

Antonio McDyess

On the current roster, there are several four star players who are not from Alabama, including Releford, Jacobs, Hankerson, and Tony Mitchell.  These were all highly-sought recruits out of H.S.

The international guys like Gueye and Engstrom don't have star ratings since they didn't play HS basketball in the U.S., but I wouldn't discount them just yet.
