Aren't scholarships for one year? Is it not the player's decision to go pro (one and done), not the coach's? Anyone here going to squawk if we sign an immediate impact big guy for next year, that may or may not become a 'one and done'?

My opinion of Coach of the Year isn't a coach that has fifteen five star players that you and I could coach to victory. I think it should be a coach that has has taken an average team and coached them into a contender for a championship.

Grant has had to do far more to get Bama to where they are this year than what Calipari has had to do with Kentucky to get them where they are.

Coach Cal has got his team to preform as well (maybe better) as expected. When was the last time a team went unbeated in in SEC play. I think CAG has done a good job of getting our season back on track. Some people would argue we have under acheived this year. We were a preseason top 25 team and a lock for the NCAA.

Top talent still has to be coached. I don't like Calipari nor do I agree with his one and done approach to recruits but he can coach.

When I say CAG as Coach of the Year, I am referencing only to the SEC. There are some other coaches nationally that have done an exceptional job with their teams on the national level that would get my vote, Wichita State for one and Missouri for another. That is subject to change though as tournament time gets here.

The original impetus for my post was my admiration for the way CAG kept the car on the track when it got sideways in the middle of the season. To the outside observer, his was not a COY kind of season. As others have said, we started out highly ranked and dropped out of site after a string of bad losses. I don'y much care about COY.

But for those of us who are better acquainted with the team, it is hard not to admire the way coach (a) stayed true to principles that are supposed to be the bedrock of amateur college athletics; (b) put freshman on the floor and brute-force coached them to several key wins at a critical juncture in the season; and (c) made tough but fair decisions about who would get to return, when, and how. I think he is still very much in a race when lesser men would have crashed into the wall or spun out into the infield.

Just guessing, but are you planning to watch the Daytona 500?

The question is whether the referant is race drivers, who include women, or NCAAMBB coaches who, i believe, do not? But a "touche" is in order either way. Where is the clink glasses emoticon?

And I actually can't stand racing. But the sport is a rich source for metaphors.

I believe there is at least one woman who has coached NCAAMBB, but the reference was to race driver Danica Patrick.

This thread has lost its way (i.e., skidded off the track, spun out, crashed, lost control...).

Lost what "way"? I started it and can attest that it had no purpose or goal. Get used to this. After A-day we have 5 months with nothing substantive to talk about unless it's something bad. I hope the wheels don't fall off of CRS in the off season like they did last year on WoollyAl.

Nice collection, and I can't believe I used another car metaphor.
