Quote
Four is better than two.

That, as Michigan State athletic director Mark Hollis so aptly put it last week, is what this all boils down to, this growing drumbeat for an end to the BCS as we know it.

NCAA president Mark Emmert has voiced support for a four-team playoff for college football and even Big Ten commissioner Jim Delany has said he's open to the idea of abandoning the BCS...

I agree with the article that any talk of change in the National Championship format is strictly people that are looking for some way to beat the SEC. Sure, they say they are tired of the SEC being there and winning the game for six years in a row and it's because of the BCS format. It's not the format, it's the dominance of a much superior conference, a conference that is so competive within itself, that it has created all of these powerhouse football teams.

When you look at the Pac 10, Big 12, Big 10, and Notre Dame, you can't help but remember the many years that they stood atop the national rankings gloating at themselves for their superiority. All of that changed and personally I think one person is responsible for that change, Bear Bryant. He came to a school, Alabama, that was struggling with it's football program and established a powerhouse team that challenged all of the previous big time programs. He did it boastfully and beat them at their game and put a southern team where it had not been in a long time, at the top. The key to this was a new brand of football, it was a brand that his team wasn't on the field to see how many points they could score but instead it was to see how many points they could keep their opponent from scoring.

This today is the reason the SEC is so dominant, they thrive on playing defensive football and it has been proven to be very dominant of the offensive styles of the other conferences. So in my opinion it's not what the SEC has done but what the other conferences haven't done that is the problem with who is winning all of these national championships. If there was one exception to all of the success of the six championships that the SEC has won it would be Florida. They had a very explosive offense but still they were more dominant on the defensive side of the game than their opponents in the championship games.

So will all of the changes that are in demand stop the SEC, probably to some degree but I still think that as long as they play the hard nose defensive style of football, their success in getting to the NCG will still be there.

Applause E-Cred  Excellent, Jamos.  Until the other conferences learn to play defense, the SEC will continue to dominate.

I remember the 60s fondly, but we're riding the crest of Alabama's greatest success right now.

I agree. There are a lot of other schools, one in particular, that ridicules Bama for not letting the image of Bear Bryant go away, but do you think thay understand why that is now. I applaud the fan base of Alabama because anything less than a NC is totally unacceptable and the coaches that come here understand that.
