Trevor Releford's speedy drives, Tony Mitchell's high-flying dunks and an effective dose of full-court pressure kept Alabama alive in the National Invitation Tournament.

Mitchell scored 23 points and Releford matched his career-high with 20 to lead the Crimson Tide to a 74-67 win over New Mexico Monday night in the second round of the NIT.

The Tide (23-11), mostly known for its defense, made 15 of 20 shots in the second half to move into the quarterfinals. Alabama will host Miami on Wednesday night, aiming for its sixth trip to the NIT final four at Madison Square Garden.

"I think our guys are excited to still have an opportunity to continue to play and continue to try to play for a championship," Tide coach Anthony Grant said.

NM's 83% free-throw shooting (vs ours 53%) kept them in the game.

Missing free throws down the stretch hurt us. I'm just glad it didn't cost us the game. NM hitting 2, or was it 3, three-pointers in a row didn't help much either. Good win for the Tide. Let's keep it going and beat the Canes Wednesday night. Roll Tide!

I checked the box score this morning and they had the attendance listed as 6,821. On TV it look like a good crowd of maybe 10,000 plus.

That ending was crazy. They threw up 3 desperate 3-point shots ina row and made everyone of them. And then Bama couldn't hit a free throw. Did Tony Mitchell look like he was completely gassed at the end? He was missing those free throws badly. I couldn't figre out why they kept giving him the ball and he was missing the free throws. At least Bama won. Roll Tide, and bring on the Canes.

Yeah, very late in the game I think we missed 7 FT's while they made three 3 pointers. Got me nervous at the end.

Tony looked like a human highlight reel last night (no offense to Dominique Wilkins).

I've posted this before, but you'll have to hear it again. Releford is turning into a real ballplayer.

I wish I could find a clip of him inbounding the ball to himself by bouncing it off that defender.  That was an awesome play.

Yeah. I only heard/saw your commentary, but thought it would travel the utube/www circuit.

I've searched for it on youtube a few times and have never found it.  I wish I had recorded that game.  That was a big heads up play.  It says a lot about how quick he can think on his feet, which really impressed me.

Miami is going to be a tough game. They are like us in the ACC they got bounced by Duke who I think will play for the NCAA Champ. RTR!
