It is lunchtime on Friday and I can't stand it any more.  It is time to start getting fired up!

Today, we become one.  If you don't feel that way, you don't belong here.  When Trent runs, we run.  When Barret blocks, we block.

We use the stretch play this year for that run.  Watch the line blocking and you'll see the similarities.

Long, but my wife's favorite memory of Bear Bryant:

In October, 1974, Betsy, Jane, Frank and I decided we had to take a road trip to Knoxville for the Alabama-UT game. Betsy, Jane and I had graduated from Alabama the spring of that year. We did not have tickets; we did not have a place to stay, but we were going to Knoxville. So that Friday afternoon we piled into Frank’s Toyota – the car that had the distinction of having only one remaining original body part – the roof – and we hit the road. A friend of Frank’s who had a place to stay and a ticket to the game rode with us. We girls resented Frank bringing “an outsider.” (We were so obnoxious that Frank’s friend found another ride home. We always suspected it was the “wet willies” we gave him from the backseat.)

It was the ultimate football weekend road trip, but the sake of some brevity, suffice it say we found a hotel room at about 1 a.m., calling from the Knoxville Krystal. We registered as Mr. and Mrs. Frank Wade. We told Betsy and Jane to make themselves small in the back seat, so if asked, we could say they were our children. Boy, were we naďve.

Game day we made our way to “the Strip”. We spent the first half in a local watering hole, Sam & Andy’s, where we watched the game on TV. Sam & Andy’s only served beer, but Jane and I, always concerned about calories, decided we had to drink scotch. So, we would sneak under the table to mix our drinks. The four of us decided that we could just walk into the stadium after halftime, but realized we would need to replenish our supply of alcohol – we certainly could not run out. So we made our way down Cumberland Boulevard to a liquor store where each of us purchased what we thought we would need. Then we proceeded back up the street to the stadium, carrying a grocery bad filled with liquor bottles and we just walked right in. We ended up sitting on the steps, single file on about the 50 yard line in the UT section. As we passed the scotch and the bourbon back and forth in our single file seating arrangement and then proceeded to cheer for Alabama, we were not the most popular people in our section. As the outcome of the game became evident, and people left early in the 3rd, we ended up with some great seats.

Naturally Alabama won and so we had to go stand outside the Alabama locker room to se some of our friends who were still playing there. But first, we stopped at midfield and mixed our drinks to toast another Alabama victory, and then we waited outside the locker room. Richard Todd came out and talked a few minutes, taking sip from one of our cups. He then went back in to tell David McIntosh were were there. So out comes McIntosh. We all hug, and McIntosh takes a few sips as we are talking. David had his back to the locker room door so he didn’t see Coach Bryant walk out. Bryant walked over to our group, said hello to the 4 of us and just looked at David who would have preferred to melt into the concrete.  He said something about the bus leaving the stadium in a few minutes so we knew it was time to say out goodbyes.

A few days later McIntosh called to say that Coach Bryant made a point of sitting next to him on the bus trip to the airport. He never said a word to David about the alcohol; in fact he didn’t say much of anything to David on that ride. David got the message.

Whew.  Lots of drinking.   Laughing
I used to study with Richard Todd; I'd study, he'd not.  He also got into Coach Bryant's doghouse.

Thanks for the story.
