SIAP: Sizing up Nick Fairley vs. Marcell Dareus

The consensus top two defensive tackles in this April’s draft are Nick Fairley of Auburn and Marcell Dareus of Alabama. Both had very productive 2010 football seasons. There has been much debate over the last few weeks as to who is the better football player. They play similar positions, but they are not similar players in style of play.

I’m sold on Fairley’s talent, but I am not sold on his football character. He has some lazy to him and there is a question about his overall mental toughness. He has the talent to be a consistent, dominating Pro Bowl-type player but there is risk involved. He needs to mature and show people that the game is very important to him. If he goes to a club that has some defensive linemen with top leadership skills we may find out just how good he can be.

...If I was the man making the decision on who to take, it would have to be Dareus. When preparing for the draft you don’t make final decisions until all the information is in. Two weeks ago I would have gone with Fairley but as I find out more, I have to go with Dareus, while knowing that Fairley could still be a great player.

McShay on Nick Fairley: “He has a chance to be a bust”

Early in the offseason, Auburn defensive tackle Nick Fairley was a near-consensus favorite to be the No. 1 overall pick in the draft. ... NFL Network analysts Warren Sapp and Mike Mayock have gone on record to say they don’t even believe Fairley is this year’s best defensive tackle.

ESPN director of college scouting Todd McShay took it a step further in a Wednesday morning conference call with the media. McShay, who previously described himself as “blown away” by Fairley’s March 8 Pro Day, now believes Fairley has the potential to be a colossal flop at the next level.

“The more you watch Fairley on tape, the more worried you get he’ll be a bust,” said McShay, who also questioned Fairley’s work ethic and consistency. “He has a chance to be a bust.”

I agree - Fairley has the real possibility of being a "bust".  Sometimes those with the biggest ego's seem to be their own worst enemy.

Well if McShay don't like him he is kind of off. I personally would take Daerus but I have kind of personal hopes about him. RTR!

I thought I saw that McShay had him as his first pick, but Kiper had him as third, I think.
