It helps, then, if a player's games are televised, or if he does enough spectacular things to make the numerous highlight shows on the various college football broadcast platforms.

Don't look now, but there is a player who fits the above description to a "T" -- Trent Richardson.

Richardson, asked about Heisman speculation after the game in Oxford, Miss., simply said he hasn't given the matter much thought. But he is almost certainly one of the top two remaining running backs, now that Marcus Lattimore's season has come to an untimely and unfortunate end at South Carolina. LaMichael James at Oregon is still a contender, depending on how he recovers from his own injury issue.


Let's be honest, though. Like so much else, Richardson's case will be made or derailed by what he does on November 5. The Ole Miss game provided a nifty stutter-step highlight, but a big effort against LSU will be definitive in voters' minds. Alabama still has team goals on the table, and Richardson is giving deference to those goals, just as Ingram did. The Crimson Tide may not have its second winner in three years, or the third straight from the state, or a fourth in five years from the SEC. It might be too early to have a Heisman conversation at all. But if you are going to have one now, you have to include Trent Richardson.

Trent needs to put up some big numbers in the next few games, IMHO. Maybe a 250 yd effort against AU after a big game against LSU. The media right now seems to be obsessed with QB's especially Luck, Robinson and Jones.

For this very reason, the only RB on the top 5 slate should get a fair shake. Sometimes one of our dogs will eat something they don't even like, just to keep other dogs from getting it. The media is liable to pick anyone, and run with it until time to vote, just to assure an SEC player does not win. I hate to compare the Heisman Trophy to an old piece of pizza crust...

What is interesting is the QB discussion, which includes the argument that QBs not on potential championship teams cannot win the most coveted individual award in college football. Stated differently, they don't give the trophy to players on losing teams very often. Therefore, the argument goes that the defense of a Heisman hopeful may keep him out of contention. You hear Skip Bayless and other Big 12 or Pac 12 fans/kooks say that the offensive numbers should speak for themselves, --that the poor defense should not be the roadblock.

So if their argument is correctly interpreted, the conferences that play no defense and run up big scores with gaudy QB stats, should win the Heisman. They never once considered that the reason their QB has these spectacular statistics, is just a sign of how poor the opposing 'D' is rather than how good the play of the QB. That these QBs made a conscious decision at some point, to attend a school in a conference that has lots of offense because they have no defense. I think this is why they continue to have the Heisman vote long before the national championship is decided. An old piece of pizza crust for an also ran QB.

I'm watching about half of the "football experts" trying to reduce BATR's 76 yarder against Ole Miss to just one good play. They want to get back to hyping their QB pick so they are diminishing this run to his "Heisman moment".

We have watched for 2 seasons (3 really) MFBATR refuse to go down. We have seen the pile continue to move down the field, with 8 guys hanging on him. We have seen legitimate linebackers get knocked on their rear ends trying to take him on, head up. We have seen him "free-up" Julio Jones with a block that the defender will have nightmares over, well into his seventies. We've watched him, game after game, hammer a defensive line purple, until he starts breaking off 30 and 50 yard sprints. We've counted his yards after contact and dared other teams to try to match his numbers. And we've watched all this against the best defenses in the country.

Them trying to call this man a "one trick pony" infuriates me.

BATR's 76 yd TD run was great. I enjoyed "the juke" move like every other Alabama fan. But IMO his best run of the game was on the 4th and 2 when he was in the Wildcat. Everyone in the stadium and watching on TV knew he was going to run up the middle. He was hit hard three yards deep in the backfield. He broke that tackle and got the 1st down. The impressive part to me was he moved the Ole Miss pile for a 10 yd gain. He has that rare combination of speed and power.

I agree that most of the writers want anyone but someone in the SEC to get it. If Richardson played in the PAC 12 or Big 10, he would be locked in already to get the Heisman. The SEC has a lot of friends with ESPN now so I look for them to give Richardson a lot of support as the season goes.

I think most of the guys that work the games really like him as well, they give him some good plugs. If TR continues at the pace he is on now and Bama keeps winning, they won't have a choice but to give him the credit he deserves.

Bama doesn't leave TR in the game to pad the stats like the powerhouse BSU playing another powerhouse CSU.  Kellen Moore is still in the game in the middle of the 3rd quarter with the score 56-13.  He threw the TD pass to make it 56.

That's certainly true, HSC.

I want to ask you guys about something else.  The NFL is changing.  No longer do RBs get the bulk of the work; now it's the passing game.  Even the draft is reflecting that now; RBs aren't top priority.

So I wonder how long before the Heisman takes the premium label off RBs.  It's always been QBs and RBs as top candidates for the Heisman.  Will it just be QBs in the near future as the game changes?

I don't think so.  I think they should look at the competition a player competes against, what he brings to the team and so forth.  When MI won, weren't there 2 qb's and 2 rb's represented?
