Quote
HUNTSVILLE, Alabama - Maybe Dale Brown had it right all along.

You know, the whole let-everyone-into-the-NCAA-tournament thing.

Every March, during his latter days as LSU's coach in the 1990s, Brown would trumpet his plan. And every March, it fell on deaf, but amused, ears.

Now, it doesn't seem like such a bad idea.

Think about it.

No more complaining. No more Joe Lunardi. No more bracketology (we can only hope that trickoration and all of those other made-up words disappear at some point).

I don't know about you, but having someone ram a 98.9-percent correct bracket down my throat every day for three weeks before the actual selection show is akin to finding out on Thanksgiving what I'm getting for Christmas.

These days, we can't let anything just happen, can we?

More Here from a guy named Bill Bryant from the Huntsville Times.

I have exactly the opposite opinion.  I think the field should be much smaller as Bball and baseball are probably the two major sports most susceptible to a one game upset.  There is clearly no time to have a full series-style playoffs in college Bball, but if there were, I'd almost guarantee that no one outside of a 5 seed would ever come close to winning the tourney.

I'm not really even a fan of the best of 3 series playoffs in the NBA.  It provides too much room for error and could let streaking bad teams advance past great regular season team that were just down for two games after a season full of great performances.

I'm for a much smaller field that ensures the best competitors are rewarded for their regular season.  Same reasoning applies to my desire to see a potential CFB playoff limited to only the top 4 (top 5 with a play-in game between #4 and #5) teams from the final poll regardless of conference affiliation (meaning if the top 4 are two SEC teams and two big 12 teams, so be it...let them play it out and forget about working ways to get all the conferences a fair shot.  Their shot comes through regular season performance, SOS, and strength of conference.)  It keeps the season relevant and prevents weaker competition passing on to affect the brackets due to a fluke single game win.

No way, there's too many lousy schools in the tourney now. All thes automatic bids should disappear and these minor programs that make the Big Dance and then ge blown out would go away. Alabama A&M in the tourney? Give me a break.

Marshal, I completely agree with you. I cannot believe all the auto-bids from the lesser programs. The reason, IMO, that there are so many of these is so the media can ooh and aah over the rare super upset one of these teams might bring to the table. It's ridiculous.

I think the NIT should be the tournament for the non-major schools and the NCAA for the major schools.
