Last night I heard an interesting ghost story.

As many of you know, Ole Miss was used as a Civil War hospital following the Battle of Shiloh.  Lots of stories resulted, many involving ghosts.

Last night we heard a story from a woman recently retired from Ole Miss.  She was in Ole Miss administration for the past 30 years, working in the Lyceum (oldest building on campus - dating to 1848).  She said she regularly worked past midnight over the years until she had an encounter with a ghost.  She said she didn't share this story before retirement, because she feared being ridiculed.

She was upstairs in an office suite about 20 years ago when a door opened.  It was 2am.  She hadn't heard anyone else in the building since before midnight.  She said she called out, expecting a custodian.  No answer.  She stood, and an apparition walked in.  "He looked like a soldier; wearing a sack jacket; couldn't tell if he was Union or Confederate."  The soldier walked past her and into the adjoining room.  Yikes.  She left for the night, and never worked after midnight there again.

I lived in a haunted house in Montgomery as a kid. We lived there for 7 years and had 3 encounters.

1. About 3:00 AM, I heard a noise in the den, then dishes rattling in the kitchen. I woke my parents up and we investigated. My dad had a baseball bat in his hands. There was a footprint in the chair by the den window. The window was closed and locked. 2 dishes were on the kitchen table. The house was totally locked.

2. I was asleep and I heard my door opening. I watched it as it slowly opened all the way and no one was there. Then it slowly closed all the way. Rinse and repeat; Dad with the baseball bat in his hand.

3. Footsteps in the attic. Yep, Dad with the baseball bat.

My oldest brother lived in Slapout, Al once upon a time. His house was totally haunted. Female voice at 3:00 AM every single night. The chandelier in the living room would tinkle often and that house was air tight.

My brother was tending to the firepacle and a bust he had on the mantle flew off and just missed his head. It happened right in front of me.

Oh yes, I'm a believer.

I hope we don't have a ghost defense anymore on our team. RTR!
