Clemson and coach Dabo Swinney agreed to a 10-year, $93 million deal on Friday, making it the largest deal in college football history.

Swinney, who has won two national championships with the Tigers, is on pace to make the same average salary as Alabama coach Nick Saban. Both are set to average $9.3 million per year over the course of their respective deals.

With a Bama-specific buy out clause:

Quote
Swinney’s contract also includes a buyout enhancement if he leaves to become the head coach at Alabama. His buyout is $4 million through Dec. 31, 2020; $3 million in 2021-2022; $2 million in 2023-2025; and $1 million in 2026-2027.

If Swinney leaves for Alabama, the buyout jumps to $6 million through Dec. 31, 2020; $4.5 million in 2021-2022; $3 million in 2023-2025; and $1.5 million in 2026-2027.

Not high enough.

But if he leaves to be a Saban assistant at Alabama, then ...

The buyout was what caught my eye. Clemson must think no matter how much Dabo does there they can't keep him from Alabama. RTR!

No buyout would keep Bama from acquiring a coach they wanted.  Clemson probably just wants an added "Bama tax" in the event Dabo leaves.

Having to give him a long term contract that would be a raise to the $9.3mil/yr is more of a deterrent than the $6mil buyout.
