Apparently there was an effort to make this game happen.  Between UCF's game against the booger eaters and Bama's CFP playoff game there was talk... It just didn't gain much traction...

Quote
According to the News, no one from Alabama was contacted about a potential change, with UA athletic director Greg Byrne stating that “the first I heard of it was when The Tuscaloosa News asked me a couple of days ago.”

All talk.  Probably no one was willing to shell out $3 million to buy out Louisville and arrange another matchup for them and U.Conn for season openers.

Agreed.  I think the sticky point was the buy out.  Louisville could have easily played UCONN which would solve that problem but no one would have been watching it so the pay off would have had to come from somewhere else...

If Louisville knew better, it would have taken the money -- at a discount -- and run.

I can only think of one group who might think UCF could play with Alabama. RTR!

On College Gameday today, they pointed out that the same service that UCF relies upon to claim a national championship in 2017 also picked Notre Dame as champion after Bama clobbered them in the 2012 BCSCG, and they also picked Oklahoma State as 2011 national champions.  (Neither of these schools claim these "championships").

They sound like "anyone-but-Bama" pickers.
