The Heisman trophy is typically awarded to the player that has the best stats for the entire season.  In the years starting with 1970 the award has been given primarily to quarterbacks and running backs.  If I counted right, qb's have won 24 times while rb's have won 22 times with one of those being credited as both a wr and a rb.  Incidently, WR's have won it in that time period two times and one time it was given to a "Cornerback/Punt Returner.

Basically, from my perspective, it is given each year to the player that can put up the most impressive stats.  If that is true though, IMO there could be an argument made that a QB's stats aren't purely his own because once he throws the ball it is, literally, out of his hands.  If the WR catches a screen pass behind the LOS for example, but then manages to run 80 yards for a TD, the QB gets and 80 yard TD pass credited to him.  If a RB takes a pitch (not a forward shuffle or anything that would be considered a throw) or handoff and then breaks a few tackles while running 80 yards for a TD the QB isn't credited with anything.  In this latter example, the RB gets credit for his own effort not counting the blocks he was able to pick up from teammates.

I would love to see a change in how the QB stats are calculated.  I think I would like to see them credit the QB with caught balls and the yardage from the LOS to the point where he catches it. The WR should still get credit for yards from the LOS to where he is either tackled or scores.

If this change were made, I think the number of RB's that wins the Heisman would jump dramatically.  There might even be many more WR's that wins it too.

Thoughts?

Football is a team game.  The Heisman is like winning Ms. Popularity in a Beauty Pageant.

Stats only play a small part.  Mostly the player who gets the most hype/coverage in November wins.  These days that's usually a QB.

These days, Tua is clearly the best player.

I tend to agree with you about QB stats being inflated by YAC.  Those yards should be credited to the WR/RB most times, especially behind the LOS pitches or screens.

Still, I don't think yardage stats will change the competition to a mostly QB award these days.
