You know who you are. You know what you said. "5 million bucks for this? I could coach that well, for $1.5."  Or "$833,000 seems a little high to beat Vandy".  YOU remember saying it. Fess up.

But Coach Saban went to work on his now infamous "PROCESS". He sent players packing that didn't "buy into" the PROCESS.  He sat some down that couldn't put the cozy days of Shula behind them.  He simply made life real uncomfortable for others, freeing them to make their own decision about how they wanted to conduct themselves.  In the latter group, many were given plenty of rope, making it easy for the ones not willing to sacrifice to hang themselves. Many did (not literally). Jimmy Johns comes to mind.

He freed scholarships and spots on the roster.  So even for Coach Saban, it was hard to field a national championship football team after a locker room "holocaust".  The remaining remnants of the Shula era were supplemented by Shula's incoming recruits, a new offense and a new defense were installed, and the PROCESS began.  Fans were a bit spoiled by a 6-2 start, but then that fizzled into a dissappointing 7-6.  Tide fans being Tide fans, the whining and squawking began.  If you were one, at least be man enough to admit it.  This could have been a Shula-esque 8-5, but the process could not condone coddling.

So when journalists in Arkansas write:

Quote
It's beginning to look like Alabama may never lose to Arkansas as long as Nick Saban is in charge of the Crimson Tide. Understand that he has outrecruited most of the country in four years, and Arkansas has been close to Alabama in collecting good football players under Bobby Petrino.

So think back to the disappointing 7-6 season when you read an Arkansas sports reporter writing:

Quote
Throughout the lineup — and this shouldn't be a shock to anyone — Alabama had many great players that Arkansas simply couldn't match.

Or read a blogger writing:

Quote
The Hogs have to hope that Trent Richardson, who they've barely tackled in his three years, leaves after this season for the NFL. It would also be nice for Arkansas if junior cornerback Dre Kirkpatrick, whose crunching hits on Hog receivers (namely Jarius Wright) set a tone for the entire Tide defense, also departed early. Middle linebacker Dont'a Hightower, who has no peer on Arkansas' side and maybe no other SEC team, singlehandedly blew up a fourth-and-1 carry by Dennis Johnson in the third quarter at Alabama's 43-yard line when Arkansas may have held some hope it could stage a miraculous comeback.

You have to think back to the point when Coach Saban sacrificed the status quo for his own system.  He has out recruited the rest of the country since he came to Tuscaloosa. The evidence was presented Saturday.  There is not a home in America where Coach Saban would not be given face time. At least to hear him out. So each year, every recruit in America is "on the board", at least until we say he is not.

So if you were not the one squawking about the 2007 campaign here is your chance to post the names and home phones of all the people you know that did.

I think a lot of us knew 2007 would suck.  It was just hard to take at the time.

Somebody should dig through the old TS archives to view the posts.  Indeed it would be interesting.

Frankly, I don't recall what I thought at the time.  I can barely remember the North Texas game already.

Yeah, I really don't remember to many outrageous comments, except the usual knuckleheads who think the team is going downhill the minute anything goes wrong. That's just the way some "fans" are.

According to google, we still get people coming here from the link they clicked on the tidesports forum, so all of those posts must still be there.  But they reset the whole forum sometime in the spring of 2010 and everything was lost.  So even before the shut down the stuff from 2007 was gone.

I (on TS, I was "Belleviewman") am one of the ones who was a bit doubtful of CNS at the time...But I sure was not a fan of Shula.  I especially was irate when Shula did not suspend a player that had been arrested for a maryjowanna charge, and let him play in the LSU game at home, when CNS was the LSU coach...and we got beat.

I thought Shula needed some "seasoning".  Think he still needs some.

I was leery of CNS..one heck of a lot of money for a guy with no ties to the U...And after the loss to ULM, I was PO'd...In my heart I knew it was going to take time, but like lots of fans, I had no patience.

I am proud to say that I was wrong, and that I think we have the BEST coach and staff in the country..and a pretty d*mn good football team also!
