Hanks sat the first two games of Alabama’s season, in accordance with NCAA-mandated redshirt rules. He played a handful of plays late in his first game as a true freshman in 2007. He petitioned for a redshirt year, but had to sit those first two games.
That is why Hanks described himself as “a caged animal” before his debut last week against North Texas. He wants desperately to make this year count.
“Having Darius Hanks back, even though he only caught a couple balls in the game, I think his blocking, his experience, doing the right thing … is helpful to the entire group,” Saban said.
He sprang Kenny Bell for 5 yards on a quick screen to the left. On the next play, he pancaked North Texas’ backup cornerback Brandin Byrd on a quick screen to the right side to Marquis Maze.
“I was pretty pumped. I plan on going out and blocking a lot better this year,” Hanks said. “That’s what people fail to realize about me. Other than catching the ball, I love to block out there on the field.”
