First, let me send congrats to the Bama coaches and players on the win.  I am sorry but it was again noting but a glorified scrimmage, like Kent State.  in the air pretty well.

Offense:

The offense moved the ball pretty well against an undersized/undermanned team. They also had pretty good field position during the game.   Bama did break off runs of 43, 58, 67 and 71 yards.  This is great for the O, but probably won’t happen against an SEC caliber team.   The O also took advantage of the loose coverage in the beginning of the game.  The O left at least 10 points on the field with 2 missed field goals and then having to settle for a FG when AJ overthrew the rec in the end zone.

QB:   AJ had a pretty good game.  However, he missed a couple of open rec’s on deep ball.  One was thrown too far, two were underthrown and one would have been a very good catch, if made, when he threw too far to the outside.  This could have possibly been the rec’s fault by coming too far inside.  I don’t know because I don’t know how the route is taught.  It looked to me on a couple of high throws that AJ did not move his feet and threw across his body.  I could also be wrong here.  PS, I don’t think he had the same advantage in play calling early or either he chose to go down field more.   I do know he had a chance to check down on one throw when it was almost picked off.  Even the announcer said he stared down the rec.  It looked to me that PS was guiding the ball instead of letting it go on his throws.

RB:    They ran hard and they picked up the blitzes well most of the time.  I would still like to see the RB’s work more side to side on their check down routes instead of just turning around.

REC:  I have 9 different players catching the ball with only one going to the RB.  The ball was spread around pretty well and they made yards after the catch.  I know it is coming and so do you.  They have run the wide rec screen enough that you should be ready for the pump and go by the blocking rec.  It is strange that I didn’t see #83 make a catch after being a factor early.  Bama does have some dept in this area.  I will say, this week, again a rec redirected his route to help a scrambling QB.  One important techniques was the rec’s catching the ball with their hands and not letting the ball get into their body.

OL:  I know I am hard on them, but they were playing North Tx.  They should have been able to run the ball at will and they did at times.  However, Bama should be able with their size and athletic advantage to run and make 3rd and 3 or 3rd and 1.  I will say I saw the combo blocks coming off too late which enabled UNT to make plays.  Also, a couple or more of the scrambles by the QB was caused by DJF missing blocks.  I don’t know if you noticed, but BJ started at LT, moved to RT, and even went and played center during the game.  Some of the best run plays came when he was at RT and CK was at left.  If my counts are correct TR and EL were hits only 5 total times behind the LOS.  Also, when the Bama OL pulls they have the athletic ability to get to the point of attack.   In my opinion they can still do a better job, especially with combo’s allowing players to get to the second level and communication which helps in picking up stunts.  I know CK missed a block and looked confused on a run by EL when the D walked another player up.

Defense:

This was another solid game against an undermanned opponent. .  What I look for in a game like this is player techniques and assignment football.  Bama I do think the scheme was very simple for this game, not to show too much.  I did notice the D giving a solid look, especially in the second half and then dropping to confuse the OL’s blocking assignments.    I will say it looked as though some of the DL weren’t getting the calls as they were looking back with their hands in the air like what is the call.  I thought, when throwing early the QB wanted to get rid of the ball in a hurry.  There were very few times when UNT broke contain and got outside.  There were a few, not many, missed tackles this game.  I would like to congratulate the backups on their goal line stand.  This was another game where Bama got no turnovers and gave up two.  There were opportunities for int’s, but they would have been great catches.

DL:  They played good assignment football.  In other words they were in their gaps and getting off blocks.   One major problem I saw was the people running stunts ran into each other.  One has to go first and the other scrape off of him.

LB:  The LB’s played well.  I just want to mention NJ.  He doesn’t get as much credit as I think he deserves.  He is in when Bama thinks the other team is in a running situation and does a very good job getting to the football.  One play that stood our was JH running with the UNT running back on the wheel route. It may have been one of these guys who busted the assignment in the beginning of the second half of who picked up the back out on the blitz.  I could have also been a DB’s assignment.

DB:   It looks to me that the DB’s are taught just to keep everything underneath and don’t allow any big plays.  I say this after watching LSU and UF and seeing their DB’s right on the hip of the rec’s.  I would think when Bama is sending pressure the DB, especially CB’s would press and redirect the rec and throw off the timing of the routes.  I mentioned this last year, but Bama does not really jam rec’s like other teams.

Special teams:   Here, 6 points were left on the field.  I keep saying it but #6, #5, #91, #3, and #33 keep doing a good job on special teams.  They are a big part of the kick off cover team.  Also, #11 made a big block on the punt return by MM which may have gone unnoticed.  I would like to see a couple of changes.  First, MM fair catch when Bama is going after the punt.  Second, I would like to see TR taken off the kickoff return team.  Put #22 back there.  On the FG block, UNT committed the cardinal sin.  The wing allowed a player to come inside when he blocked out.

Penalties:  Again there were few penalties.  The major one was the pass interference in the end zone, but Bama still held them out.

Finally, I wish the fans had stayed to watch those guys who don’t get on the field as much.  I am sure it would mean a lot to see a packed stadium when they are playing.

Please feel free to comment.

Thanks hscoach. I agree.

Barrett Jones played at both tackle positions LG and center. I did not see him at RG though he may have played there as well.

BJ made a great block on Lacy's TD run when he was at RT.

Thanks hscoach.

I've notice Fluker do a few O lay blocks this year. Is he not moving his feet fast enough or what?

I wish the fans would stay the whole game as well. Those guys deserve it.

Thanks, Coach.  E-cred for sharing your knowledge and insight.

I'm eager to see if our LBs and DL can get to the QB in SEC games, and if LBs can cover quality receivers.  We'll know a lot more after Arkansas.

Thanks again.

This year the most surprising freshman has been Christion Jones who is getting early playing time at WR over more highly touted true freshmen WRs and not too mention the overall depth we have here. Have you noticed anything about his ability?

Thanks for your insightful comments.  Unfortunately, you haven't made me feel any better about this team.  Too many mistakes, large & small, that are going to come back to bite us.  Next two games will basically define the season and the "identity" of this team.

I had to look up #11. Either Brandon Gibson or So. DB Ranzell Watkins that sprung MM.

I felt good that Bama had the PSU game (real BCS speed game) before opening up SEC play. But playing NTS at slow speed may be a setback in our preparation. Maybe Bama dictated the speed of the game, not NTS, so it was no big deal. You thought hs?

Don't know if I can speak a lot on his ability, but the coaches seem to show confidence in him since he is the one back on punts when MM is not in there.

One thought it was a very simple/vanilla scheme.  One of my fears is the inability to put the ball in the endzone against inferior talent.  What will happen when they start the SEC schedule?

One thing I expect we will NOT see Saturday is AJ losing momentum and rhythm getting pulled for PS.  Another plus is that the Tide takes their SEC openers SERIOUS.  I think it all important for AJ to get off to a quick start, establishing some confidence.  Also the shuffling of guys in and out (we do that some anyway) won't happen as much and guys will be lined up for impact and not just for evaluating.    You?
