BTW, it wasn't a chop block.  It was a "hit below the waist".
According to what we read last week, it should have been a penalty.  The block came from the side, not the front, which is likely why it was called.  BUT, it's seldom called when the initial contact is at the waist, not the legs.

RULE: "Offensive players who are outside the tackle box at the snap, and those who leave the tackle box after the snap, may only block an opponent below the waist if the force of the initial contact is directly at the opponent's front."

I saw this play when it happened.  According to the rule stated by Chechem above, this was a legit call by the ref (IMHO.)  The way it was discussed on TV left some doubt but they obviously didn't know the rule.

Also, to me the unsportsman-like call on the FSU bench was justified.

It looked to me like the refs missed a holding call on FSU on the same play.  It's about 7-10 yards behind the block that drew the flag.

FWIW, I thought the targeting call on the FSU player, and the non-call on the Clemson player hitting the FSU QB were both correct.

Overall I thought the refs in this game did a mediocre job.  As bad as SEC refs.  So maybe Jimbo had had all he could stand the the illegal block call was the final straw.

I thought it was a legit call after our prior discussions, and here's the rule to back it up.  They might have even called this a "clip" penalty in my playing days -- it looked like a clip at full speed.

Preacher is preaching on this Sunday.  Jimbo is showing no class.

As an official, of course I am sickened by Jimbo's rant. That was definitely a foul since it was from the side and not from the front. Also, his comment about the unsportsmanlike conduct foul on his assistant is laughable -"he was talking to himself." This must be taught in coaching school because I have heard it on the JV and HS level.
As officials, we are definitely held accountable, unlike Jimbo want so think. On the HS level we are evaluated, but on the NCAA and NFL level, even more so. They are looked at on film on every play and are graded. If they don't make the grade, they are suspended or fired. All I ask is this: if Jimbo or anyone else thinks the job is easy, come on out and try it.
