We are one week away from our mid term exam against Arkansas.  That game will tell us a lot about our team.  To me, as of right now, we still have a lot of work to do if we are going to win #17 this year.  The potential is there, we just haven't put all of the pieces together yet.

The defense is pretty solid, but we do have some weaknesses on the backend.  Maybe now that Tony Brown is back he can help.

I think we are OK on special teams when Jackson is the return man.  I think we will go back to him for the tougher games coming up.  Kicking and punting is somewhat inconsistent.

On offense, I think we need to let Hurts run the ball more and it will open things up considerably.  I also think we have intentionally avoided having him run the ball so far so that he can work on his passing game.  Again, now that we are to the meat of the schedule I look for us to end some of the practice/experiments that we have been doing.  Unless we get a big lead of course, which actually is pretty much how things went for the UK game.

The key to the season will come down to this:

1.  Will we get better each week so that we are ready for the playoffs by the end of the year?
2.  Will we be able to stay at least one step ahead of the opponent for that week?

Fortunately for us, our remaining opponents have all shown weaknesses as well.

We have Arkansas up next.  It will probably come as a surprise to a lot of you guys to hear that they are throwing the ball all over the field this year.  From what I have seen, their passing game is much better than their running game.  On defense, I think they are not as good at stopping the run as they have been in the past.  That goes in our favor because I don't know if we are ready to beat a team by relying solely on our passing game right now.

After that we have UT.  Tennessee is like a box of chocolates.  You never know what you are going to get.  If the good UT shows up for both halves, then our front 4 will have to get after the QB and stay in his face all day.  Since UT is in the East though, we could lose this game and still control our own destiny.

Next up is Texas A&M.  aTm is much better on defense this year now that they have Chavis managing that phase of the game.  This may be our toughest remaining game and will probably be a playoff game with the winner advancing to Atlanta.

If we can get through those 3 games with at least 2 victories over the West teams then we should be in a good position to win out and make it to the playoffs.  We still have a down LSU team but the rest are cupcakes.  We will be heavily favored in all of our November games.

Well not getting to see the games as most do, I get to call this from ELi's standpoint. They are always trying to make us sound good or giving excuses as to why we aren't. It seems our kicking game is good except FG kicking and I thought we had some new kicker that is suppose to be great. Why not let him kick them? Now when I hear ELi it sounds as if the O-line does not have their minds on games. It sounds as if when we have a chance to slam a door in someone's face on a drive, either one of the tackles are told to make sure to jump off sides so we have to back up and make it more difficult. One week it will be one the next week the other.
Pass blocking sounds weak, and that may be why Hurts couldn't throw one in a Cotton Basket 50 yards away. When you have WR's like we do you have to hit a couple of deep balls so the DB's are nervous the whole game. Our defense needs to stop letting people drive and score at will in the 1st Qtr. period is my thought.
I for one thinks that Cooper and Cornwell need some work even in the close games to keep their heads about them because we are one play away from them being the team runners.
Now to my Final suggestion. It is time for discipline on penalties, fumbles and injuries. The first 2 I mention in the SEC will get you whipped in a heartbeat just ask Georgia and Florida. Dumb mistakes are killer in the SEC. If my thoughts are correct I believe TA&M is least penalized team. Correct me if I am wrong.
OK my final grade right now at this point in the season is:
C+. Please this is MHO from listening to ELI without watching. RTR!

Good assessment, SC. Next three games will be tough but Bama should win all three if everything goes well. But UT will be super fired up and probably going to be a close game. A&M scares me but at least they are in Bryant Denny. I think some of the defensive problems are probably just the changeover from Kirby to Jeremy.

Cecil speaks pretty well to your question...

We are playing a lot of freshmen/sophs and true frosh at some key positions, most notably QB.  Hurts has overall played quite well but there are times in every game when he plays like a freshman.  The only cure for that is playing time.  Just gotta hope we don't loose a game while he's still learnilng.

I'm glad we have Arky road game before UT.  It will give our young players another hostile environment experience.  Neyland stadium will be much more hostile than Arky though.

As Cecil notes, we have some injured guys we need to get back on O.  That will help Hurts.  Arky will be a good test for our DBs.  I hope they are up to it.  Still have my doubts about our DBs.  You saw what happened vs. OM.

Still think this team neads stronger, more vocal leaders.  They gotta be there every day in practice pushing guys to get better.  I kinda doubt that's happening.  This team has a lot of hard work to do to reach their potential.  I just don't know if enough of them are willing to put in that hard work. (Easy for me to say!!!)

Roll Tide anyway...

Texas A&M is off the week before they play us, so that's somewhat concerning.

I'm not really looking to risk our only real QB in more running. He needs to work on his passing and reading the defense. Also, we had all this preseason talk about our great number of WR's. Where's Foster, Cam Sims, OJ Howard, Trevon Diggs, TJ Simmons, and others.

He won the job because of his running ability.  If we take that off the table then we probably would have been better off with Barnett.  But CNS chose to go with the dual threat QB, so we need to take advantage of all of his skills.

Also, the time for working on passing and reading the defense has already come and gone.  It's showtime now.  If we can make it unscathed through these next 3 games, he can work on those things more during November.

Not that we should abandon the passing game or anything, but we might need to sprinkle in just a little more QB runs and RPOs than we have done so far in order to keep these upcoming teams on their heels more.

Barnett is a much better passer. I think Hurts won the job because of his poise and character as much as anything else, and at this point he's very inconsistent as a passer. He's had four games in the first five to work on his passing without a lot of pressure, but things are about to get much more serious. His running is certainly something the team can fall back on if the passing game is having trouble.  I think a few designed runs from time to time to keep the defense guessing will be good, but I don't want him taking hits on every play.

Having Ardarius back will help. He is our most athletic player and having him in the game will take pressure off of Ridley and OJ.

We are indeed, a very young team outside of the D line, but these guys are gaining experience every game. Look at Jacobs. This kid is the real deal and getting better every game. Bo looked good Saturday also. I still don't think Harris is 100% and it showed Saturday.

So, when we want to pound the rock, we've done pretty well, especially of late. We need to do more of it to open up the passing game.

If we can put all this in sync, the O should be ok.

The D is solid as long as the D line can continue to pressure the QB. That's correct about the weak link being the secondary, but not at every spot. Ronnie Harrison doesn't seem to be quite as sharp as he was last year. I hope Tony Brown can step up now that he's back. Might be the cure.

Arky will be our 2nd real test and they are laying in wait for us. I hope we're ready. I think we will be.
