Not a real shock. If they can get a secret agreement from Herman to go to Texas, Strong is toast.

Quote
- Texas athletic director Mike Perrin says he would be evaluating "all facets" of the football program following Saturday's 49-31 loss at Oklahoma State.

Perrin reportedly told Orangebloods.com, when asked about coach Charlie Strong's future, that "We need to evaluate what happened here."

I don't think Herman would go to Texas. The scrutiny is off the charts there, and I think he likes it at Houston.

I think the insistence that the big boosters think they should have 24/7 access to the coach is a huge problem.

Not exactly a rip-roaring endorsement of Strong.

Quote
Texas’ athletic director Mike Perrin did not exactly give Charlie Strong the strongest of endorsements after the Longhorns’ loss to Oklahoma State on Saturday, but that does not mean the head coach’s job is in immediate danger. In fact, one report says Texas will not fire Strong during the season.

 Houston, we have a problem

Strong is 13-16 (9-10 Big 12) in his 3rd year at Texas. He should be showing signs of improvement but his team looks bad. The early win over Notre Dame does not look good any more since they are 2-3 with a loss to Duke. The defense is terrible. They have given up 47 or more points in 3 of their 4 games.

They face Oklahoma next. A meaningless game to everyone but the two coaches in that game.

I think if Oklahoma scores 42 or more on Texas, then Strong will be fired after the season. They still have to face Baylor, Texas Tech, & Oklahoma State, all high-scoring teams.

What is it with HC's that know their Coordinators are not getting it done and they would rather lose their job than to go get a new man to improve the team? This makes no sense to me. RTR!

I think you make an excellent point. They wanted another back-slapper, golf playing, easy going Mack Brown type.

This helps explain Strong's main problem.

Quote
When Strong came to Texas, he brought Bedford and offensive coordinator Shawn Watson with him.

Back in 2006, Mike Gundy let Bedford go as his defensive coordinator after a 7-6 season and three losses in the season's final four games. After the 2010 season, Nebraska coach Bo Pelini encouraged Watson to find another job after late-season offensive struggles with quarterback Taylor Martinez. Both eventually landed as Strong's coordinators at Louisville.

For as much focus as a head coach gets, his most important job is hiring a staff capable of making his vision for a program reality. There was plenty of evidence that Strong wasn't doing that when he came to Texas, a questionable choice at a school that believes it competes on a different level than much of college football and is capable of paying coordinators seven-figure salaries.

Both decisions laid the groundwork for where Strong is today and led to an embarrassing offseason offensive coordinator search that included getting turned down by TCU's co-coordinator and settling for young Sterlin Gilbert, who has succeeded but had almost no experience as a playcaller.
