His team lost, so it's not the perfect time, but UNC's academic scandal has become reality at UNC.  The faculty want change in athletics, including basketball.

It's time!

I agree. And as was discussed yesterday, I don't think he is in good health. Needs to hang it up.

He'll fight it, because there was speculation a couple of months ago that he'd retire; infuriated him.  So he'll prolly wait until summer, but likely will retire (or should).  They need a fresh start.

I'm curious to see how much all of this will affect the basketball program. Can't think they would maintain excellence during the fallout and impending sanctions.

Having said that, if RW does retire, do they go after a top notch coach or an interim, Mike Shula, kind of guy?

They'll attract the best.  Some of those idiots will want Calipari.  More likely another established coach, as RW was.

I've got a feeling he might be available.

Good article about Williams health & possible replacements. They should add Jay Wright to the list. UNC is conceited enough to think they can get him.

Quote
Part of the intrigue surrounding the fate of Williams is that there's no clear-cut favorite to replace him as North Carolina's coach. UNC is a place that values UNC ties, but the Carolina tree is essentially barren of qualified candidates. So who will replace Ol' Roy when he limps into retirement, whenever that may be? Here a few candidates based on interviews in and around the Final Four. This list was put together with the understanding that Shaka Smart is happy at Texas and Brad Stevens isn't leaving the NBA. The names below are presented in order of the likelihood that they'll wind up with the job in Chapel Hill.

Well I don't think the family tree thing works very well, case in point us at Alabama. We had to go out and hire a real coach who had never been to Alabama so the family tree thing is not good. Now, the coach of WSU or the coach at Xavier might be good choices. I wouldn't hire that Rick guy from in Kentucky, or the guy who coaches Kentucky because sooner or later Kentucky will pay for his actions wait and see. Hubert Davis is just not impressive to me, but one thing for sure they better hire a coach with some chest and boldness to get through all the investigation crap. The Preacher has spoken and this is more than I said in 12 months. RTR!

Coach Bryant worked out pretty well for us.
Jim Boeheim (Syracuse) worked out okay.
Roy Williams played at UNC.
Jim Harbaugh seems like a good fit.

Okay, let's clarify:

You shouldn't hire a coach JUST 'CAUSE he's family...

And you shouldn't hire one JUST 'CAUSE he's not!
