The NCAA has charged Ole Miss with rules violations in football, women's basketball, and track and field, sources told ESPN, confirming a media report.

Sources told Yahoo! Sports, which first reported the NCAA charges, that the school is facing about 30 violations, though an Ole Miss source disputed that number to ESPN's Edward Aschoff.

Many of the allegations are either not connected to the football team or predate coach Hugh Freeze's arrival, happening during the tenure of Houston Nutt (2008-11), sources told ESPN. Sources said newer allegations regarding the football team center on left tackle Laremy Tunsil, who was investigated during the 2015 season for receiving improper benefits and missed seven games.

I'll update you guys as more comes out.
The Tunsil problem is a BIGGIE ("loaner car" for 6 months, agents, etc.).

Yeah, most people are thinking the same thing, even though Finebaum was downplaying it this afternoon. Could get interesting if the NCAA knew what it was doing.

He served a 7 game suspension for those things which is one reason it was downplayed. Finebaum was downplaying the "Breaking News" of the violations. They were known about before this. Houston Nutt is the gift that keeps on giving for Ole Miss. Remember when he had 34 commits for Signing Day.

Morning details:

Quote
This past football season, Mississippi offensive tackle Laremy Tunsil – one of the highest-rated recruits in program history – sat out seven games for accepting impermissible benefits. Tunsil, according to an Ole Miss release, was found to have accepted “use of three separate loaner vehicles over a sixth-month period without payment, a four-month interest-free promissory note on a $3,000 down payment for purchasing a used vehicle, two nights of lodging at a local home, an airline ticket purchased by a friend of a teammate, and one day use of a rental vehicle. In addition, it was determined that Tunsil was not completely forthcoming when initially questioned by NCAA investigators regarding the loaner vehicles.” Tunsil has since declared for the NFL draft and is expected to be a high first-round pick....

The football violations outside of those related to Tunsil likely stem in part from former assistant football coach David Saunders, who received an eight-year show cause order from the NCAA earlier this month after committing multiple violations while at the University of Louisiana-Lafayette.

The NCAA announced its penalties against Saunders in a Committee on Infractions report.

The NCAA found Saunders helped five ULL recruits receive fraudulent ACT scores while he was an assistant coach there, lied to the NCAA about his involvement and failed to cooperate with the investigation. He also gave a total of $6,500 to a player.

Ole Miss became linked to the investigation when NCAA enforcement staff interviewed Saunders on Dec. 16, 2013, about “events that took place while that assistant was employed” elsewhere, according to the Committee on Infractions’ report, which added a football player “that institution recruited” was also part of the interview.

Legal counsel representing Ole Miss was part of the interview, according to ULL’s response to the NCAA’s Notice of Allegations.

“During the interviews, the enforcement staff believed the former assistant football coach may have known of or may have been involved in NCAA rules violations concerning academic issues while at another member institution,” the Committee on Infractions’ report read.

ULL self-imposed a reduction of 11 scholarships over three seasons and the number of off-campus recruiting days and official visits the school can provide as well as vacating its 2011 season, which included playing in the New Orleans Bowl.

The Committee on Infractions placed the program on probation through Jan. 11, 2018, fined it $5,000, vacated games from the 2012-14 seasons in which ineligible athletes competed and added more restrictions on how much recruiting the team can do....

This is deeper than simply a hint of recruiting violations by Saunders.  He wasn't just a coach at ULL.  He had a long history with Ole Miss:

Quote
Saunders worked for two years apiece as the assistant to athletic director for recruiting and coordinator of high school and community college relations from 1998 to 2002 at Ole Miss. He was also an assistant coach in 2006 and a football administrative assistant in 2010.

He was hired as an assistant coach at Louisiana-Lafayette on Jan. 3, 2011, before being fired on Oct. 31, 2014. He has since become the head coach at Pearl River Community College.

I believe that when this whole story is finished, Ole Miss might have many regrets for all that they will be accused of. Success can be very costly, especially when it is attained by deceivement but you never know about the NCAA and it's abilities to investigate and punish anymore.

There have been many schools that have had to face the consequences of such deceivement and in our case the Tennessee and Auburn stories are the most familiar. It seemed that the NCAA had all that they needed to hammer those two on the academic side with professors willing to testify of those wrong doings but in the end, both schools skated free.

You can add Bama's name to the list as well but it wasn't grades that got Bama in trouble, it was the textbooks. Bama self reported their case in doing what they thought was the right thing to do and the NCAA just smiled and said thanks for helping us and hammered Bama. To me that decision by the NCAA is what has caused the problems that we see and read about in today's world.

Will Ole Miss do the same in this case, I would think so. It reminds me of the old adage, "if you didn't see me do it or have pictures, it never happened."

Col. Rebel Black Bear is weeping.

By the way, that gif of Nutt never gets old.
