Texas A&M has notified the Big 12 it will withdraw from the conference, according to a newspaper report.

The university said earlier Monday it had received a letter from Big 12 Commissioner Dan Beebe outlining the withdrawal procedure should the Aggies decide to leave the league.

"I certainly appreciate the discussion among the Big 12 presidents/chancellors and the expression of their desire for Texas A&M to remain in the conference," Loftin said in a statement issued before The New York Times report. "We all agree that Texas A&M is an extremely valuable institution; thus, it is incumbent upon me, as the president of the university, to ensure that we are in a position to enhance our national visibility and future financial opportunity."

Sources close to Texas A&M tell Orangebloods.com the Aggies will announce they are formally withdrawing from the Big 12 on Tuesday, setting up their application for membership to the Southeastern Conference.

The sources said Texas A&M has spent the past few days trying to iron out what the Aggies' exit from the Big 12 will cost.

The full exit fee penalty would be between $28 million and $31 million, according to Big 12 sources. But the Big 12 could withhold A&M's revenue for the 2011-12 academic year, which would total roughly $18 million.

A few years ago $28-31M would be a deal breaker.  Today TAMU probably feel like they're getting off easy.

Big money under them helmets, boys.

What did Colorado and Nebraska have to pay? Any idea.

I think they paid something like $7 million but after that the Big 12 increased the fines.

Texas A&M Closer to Withdrawing From Big 12
By PETE THAMEL
Published: August 29, 2011

Quote
This latest step in the Aggies’ effort to join the Southeastern Conference appears to have two stumbling blocks. The first is Texas A&M’s exit fee from the Big 12, which it has not negotiated. That amount is expected to be close to $15 million. The other is the approval of the S.E.C. presidents. Nine of the 12 would have to vote in favor for Texas A&M to become a member of the conference. It is unlikely that Texas A&M would be this far along in the process without adequate S.E.C. presidential support.

Texas A&M hopes to play in the S.E.C. during the 2012 football season, which would appear to leave the conference with a mathematically clunky 13 teams for one year.

Texas A&M wants lower exit fee from Big 12

Quote
Although Texas A&M doesn't know for sure that it's going to leave the Big 12 for the SEC -- wink, wink -- the school is going through all the necessary steps to make it happen.

According to Chuck Carlton of the Dallas Morning News, the Big 12 is looking for something in the neighborhood of $28 million from Texas A&M if it wants to leave. Which is an incredibly expensive divorce.

In another tweet from the Austin American-Statesman's Kirk Bohls, the Aggies are negotiating to pay something between $10 and $15 million.

To put it in perspective, when Nebraska left the Big 12 for the Big Ten last year, the Cornhuskers paid just over $9 million. Colorado paid about $7 million.
