'We've got to improve in sacks and tackles for loss. That's one of the big goals, a big emphasis for us this year," Smart said. "I felt like we were really good in the red area last year, and that really saved a young defense."
The Crimson Tide returns two defensive linemen with significant game experience in Josh Chapman and Damion Square. Replacing NFL first-round draft choice Marcell Dareus will be a difficult challenge, and one that won't be tasked to a single player.
"We certainly have to do it by committee, I'll say that. It's hard to say if we've got a Marcell Dareus type. You can coach a long time and never coach a guy that talented," Smart said. "So it's got to be done by committee. I hope, I would like to think, that we're going to have more depth this year. Only time will tell that. But we hope we can get it done through a different method, by having a little more depth, playing a few more guys."
