Not that it matters, but I just am curious about the rule.  The QB did not get the ball pass the line of scrimmage, and there was no eligible receiver in the area.  There were only 3 LSU players close to where he threw it, and all of them were linemen.

If it was not int. grounding, why was it not an illegal touch by an ineligible receiver?

The refs placed the ball back at the original line of scrimmage, like it was an incomplete pass

No big deal, just want to know the rule.

The play I remember had an illegal touching call.   Huh?

Saban was asking the ref the same question, so were the announcers since no penalty was imposed.

 Huh?

The refs moved the ball back from where the lineman ended up with the ball, but they placed the ball back at the original line of scrimmage.  I couldn't hear what the refs called, but I'm pretty sure they told him, "great catch, but you can't do that". Laughing

It was a penalty for ineligible receiver, but Bama declined it since it made it 4th and long.

That's correct.  I remember the flag being thrown.  TV coverage was sketchy last night, but game summary says:

"Brandon Harris middle pass complete to Jerald Hawkins for 2 yards to the UA47 (A. Robinson), PENALTY LS illegal touching declined."

Making it 4th and 8, with LSU punting.  Click here for link

Those of us in the stadium, sitting a quarter mile away and unable to hear anything may have had an advantage in understanding what happened relative to those who were listening to Gary and Verne.

The illegal touching was declined by CNS to bring up 4th down. I wondered why it was not intentional grounding since there was not an eligible receiver in the area. I read in an article yesterday that intentional grounding cannot be called on a completed pass. If completed to an ineligible receiver illegal touching is the correct call.

I think what Saban was arguing about was that he thought it should've been a loss of down penalty if he accepted it.  Otherwise, throwing a ball to an OL and letting him catch it is almost always better than taking grounding.

Not sure why no intentional grounding either.
There were 3 LSU players together on that play, all 3 linemen.  No other LSU players were close at all to where the ball was thrown.

If a forward pass is touched or caught by an ineligible receiver, it is illegal touching.
