**Tight Ends Williams and Smelley Want to do More Than Dirty Work**

At other schools, tight end is a sexy position. At Alabama, it isn't always pretty. It seldom is glamorous.

Two years ago, tight end Aaron Hernandez led pass-happy Florida with 68 catches. Last season, tight end D.J. Williams led air-it-out Arkansas with 54 catches.

Statistics for Alabama's tight ends pale in comparison, but that doesn't mean the position isn't important for the Crimson Tide.

While many other schools spread their offense out, Alabama's pro-style attack is built around not one but two tight ends. One is a glorified offensive lineman; the other is a glorified fullback. Both are linchpins in the running game.

This season, junior Michael Williams is a returning starter in the big, physical role. Senior Brad Smelley moves into the smaller, finesse position.
