Happens too often these days.  Lady plowed into a telephone pole on my street the other day and totaled her car because she was on the phone.  This is a neighborhood, 25 mph speed limit.

HTH
She took out the telephone pole too.  I don't think she'll be getting a check from AllState.

Unfortunately, yes she will.  And you and I will pay for it!!

Texting while driving is killing hundreds of kids every month.  It's an addiction, and an epidemic.  Worst thing for drivers since prohibition ended!

Our college halls are quiet between classes.  Nobody is talking any more.  I counted the number of students walking the halls past my office who were on their phones.  60% had their phones out using them while walking.  They're addicted.  It'll kill a bunch of them unless technology blocking their usage (while driving) is adopted.

Not to diminish the tragedy of Tenpenny's death.  It may be unrelated to phone usage.  But maybe we can prevent future accidents by brainstorming on solutions.

I've been saying this all along. To me, this is at least as important as seat belts. I'm not one for much gubment interference, but they've mandated seatbelts and now rear view cameras, so while they're at it, they may as well add this. Texting/driving has become an epidemic. You know they have the technology to disable texting while in motion.

Certainly they do.  Even my gps will not allow input while in motion so I'm sure cell devices can do the same.  However, I think this needs to be incorporated into the stearing column of vehicles that blocks that ability while moving for devices within a certain area of the car where the driver could reasonably reach in an effort to do so.  That would allow passengers to continue texting as they wish.  The biggest problem with that would be that some of the idiots doing it now would be trying to lean over and position the phone so they could still text while driving.

You are exactly right Chech. The cell phone 'epidemic' is and will kill more people than any disease the world has ever had to deal with. Something has to be done and done in a hurry. All of these companies that are providing the electronic devices should be held accountable as the automobile makers are for deaths and injuries. JMHO

Sounds that way but not meant that way. I would like for the auto industry to find a way to  electronically block the signalling for any of the cell instruments while the car is running.

I don't know enough about the technology to know how feasible that would be, or how expensive.  It has gotten ridiculous how many people drive distracted with their phones these days.  Some States have regulations, Don't Text and Drive, Hands Free Phone only.  Those are good first steps, but need to be enforced more closely.  I like the Hands Free Rule because it automatically eliminates texting.  I rarely even speak on the phone when I drive, unless I'm cruising on the interstate.

For repeat texting offenders, they might be able to do something similar to what happens to repeat DUI offenders, where the car won't start or run unless the phone is parked in a specific holster in the car, preferably located out of reach.  That way, repeat offenders would bear the cost of their transgressions.

The folks at Car and Driver Magazine have now documentedjust dangerous it can be.

Rigging a car with a red light to alert drivers when to brake, the magazine tested how long it takes to hit the brake when sober, when legally drunk at .08, when reading and e-mail, and when sending a text. The results are scary. Driving 70 miles per hour on a deserted air strip Car and Driver editor Eddie Alterman was slower and slower reacting and braking when e-mailing and texting.

The results:

    Unimpaired: .54 seconds to brake
    Legally drunk: add 4 feet
    Reading e-mail: add 36 feet
Sending a text: add 70 feet

Was it John Daly the golfer being tested. He claims he plays golf better when drunk.
