Auburn is ranked 19th, the lowest for a defending national champion since USA Today began administering the coaches' poll in 1991. That's four spot higher than the Tigers started last season before their improbable title run.

1. Oklahoma (42)  12-2 1,454 6
2. Alabama (13)  10-3 1,414 11
3. Oregon (2)  12-1 1,309 3
4. LSU (2)  11-2 1,296 8t
5. Florida State 10-4 1,116 16
6. Stanford 12-1 1,101 4
7. Boise State 12-1 1,065 7
8. Oklahoma State 11-2 933 10
9. Texas A&M 9-4 885 21
10. Wisconsin 11-2 829 8t
11. Nebraska 10-4 814 19
12. South Carolina 9-5 779 22
13. Virginia Tech 11-3 767 15
14. Arkansas 10-3 750 12
15. TCU  13-0 687 2
16. Ohio State 12-1 631 5
17. Michigan State 11-2 536 14
18. Notre Dame 8-5 440 NR
19. Auburn 14-0 329 1
20. Mississippi State 9-4 301 17
21. Missouri 10-3 266 18
22. Georgia 6-7 260 NR
23. Florida 8-5 240 NR
24. Texas 5-7 162 NR
25. Penn State 7-6 161 NR

Alabama and LSU are among eight Southeastern Conference teams that are ranked. South Carolina is ranked No. 12. Arkansas is ranked No. 14. Defending national champion Auburn is ranked No. 19. Mississippi State is ranked No. 20. Georgia is ranked No. 22. Florida is ranked No. 23.

The AP poll will be released on Aug. 20.

There ain't no way they are 42-13 first place votes better than Bama, but I'll take the #2 ranking. We always do better when we're behind (See 2009).

Yeah. Number one ranking in SEC is a target.

Number 2 is as good as number 1. Both make the BCS game and the winner takes all.  Cheesy

Bama has always done well with a No. 2 ranking.  Less of a target and more motivation.  Here's hoping we stay there until the last game of the season, when we move up to #1.

This is where they need to be, the media makes too much out of being #1.

While it does not matter, I was secretly hoping for #1. As long as your watching the scores crawler ALL DAY LONG every Saturday, it may as well be the Tide in that top spot.  PSU at #25 gets the Top 25 call just because voters feel sorry for Jopa. Again this season, the embarassingly striking omission of the Big East. Let me be first to get the ball rolling on them losing their BCS qualifying status as a league. This would make room for a third SEC qualifier.

No Big East in BCS could happen. UCONN ended up having to spend millions of it's own money on tickets and thousands of mandatory hotel rooms last Jan. BCS will give a birth to a team from a power conference if they can.

For an SEC team, it makes no difference where you start in the preseason poll.  If you handle your business against the SEC competition, you will make the title game.  According to the OP article, Auburn started at #23 last year, if I understand that correctly.  The way the conferences line up right now, an undefeated SEC champ will always go to the big game, unless of course you're Auburn.

I like to get that dig in there when I can.  2004- Auburn goes undefeated and is overlooked.  Only a few years later, LSU loses 2 games, goes to the title game, and wins.

A different set of circumstances, but you'd like to think the barn was slighted simply because they smell funny.
