The University of Alabama football season begins exactly six weeks from today.

From listening to Nick Saban on Friday, it seems like that, instead of marking the end of a battle for the Crimson Tide's starting quarterback job, might just be the beginning.

Sophomore A.J. McCarron and redshirt freshman Phillip Sims vied for the position as Greg McElroy's successor through the spring, and figure to do so through August as well.

Technically, one or the other will have to take the first snap of the Crimson Tide's season against Kent State on Sept. 3, but Saban told the crowd at SEC Media Days that the race probably won't be over at that point.

Gotta love CNS.  He's making it clear that the QB's are going to have to work HARD all season, not just right now. Smiley

Competition at every position makes players better. Anyone who has ever played sports know you work harder when someone is about to take your starting position away. It is a great problem to have.

In my opinion, as far as talent they are pretty equal.  The difference will be which QB will make fewest mistake or the best decisions.

I agree with hscoach that their talent is pretty equal. I like Sims becuase I think he will make better decisions and protect the ball. McCarron has happy feet in the pocket and throws too many balls up for grabs.

From what I've seen of the two in scrimmages, I totally agree with you. In the scimmage before the ADay game, McCarron seemed to run backwards when he was pressured in the pocket as Sims seemed to find a way to get some positive yardage when he was pressured.

I thought it WAS in the A Day game that McCarron ended up flushed out of the pocket and running for his (no contact) life. Putting that aside, I am not sure that AJ was not TOLD to go make something happen in the A Day game. One reason is that CNS did not seem at all upset with the INTs in his post game interview.
