ROLL TIDE, boys!!! My best to those going to God's Country for the game today. I have my spot at la casa de cbbama with some cold beverages (adult and non-adult), and I think I should have some chicken wings for lunch, since I haven't found a place that sells owl yet.

Here's to hoping the boys take care of business today.

It was a hot day in Tuscaloosa.  One of those days where the temperature and humidity sit in the 90s, edging upwards to see which would hit 100 first.  Eventually, humidity won, straight down rain fell, lightening delayed the game.

I have to say that the first thing that impressed me was just how big are the Bama players. Saban has assembled the greatest collection of talent in the country, and it shows.  Sure, the FAU player's comparatively diminutive size didn't help dissuade that opinion, but I've watched many Bama games from the same vantage point, and I don't recall being quite as impressed by the size and athleticism at every position.

At QB, Sims played fast and confidently and went 8/9 for three quick touchdowns in the first quarter.  Many of the completions were bubble screens... more talented defenses will sit on Amari Cooper and keep those gains to a minimum. But it is clear Sims is the starter for a reason, he efficiently moved the chains, avoided any major mistake, and played fast.

Coker was slower in making decisions, missed an open receiver, threw a pass too late to Cooper over the middle, had a few overthrows/underthrows on short passes, failed to put enough air under the ball on a deep ball so the receiver could run under it.  But once he calmed down and gained some confidence, he made a few very good passes, deeper than Sims, which stretched the defense and opened up the run game and a screen pass which he executed perfectly.

Bama's playbook seems designed with Sims in mind, with QB roll-out passes.  Or maybe the roll-out to the right side is because Bama has a true freshman starting at left tackle.  Sims does well rolling out, and it gives him a run option.  Coker seems a bit less settled with the roll-out, prefers to set his feet before he throws, does better passing out of a pocket. Kiffin seemed to recognize this and had Coker take some snaps under center.  Coker can run the ball, but needs to learn not to duck his head and drive for more yards - he's a QB.

Overall, it was great being in Tuscaloosa.  Most photos I have are of the band, as my daughter had the camera.

Excellent assessment, CP. Sims seemed to throw the crisper passes and was more accurate than Coker. Coker has some catching up to do, and I think will get there, eventually, but I think we all know who our starter is.
