A few things to know about Alabama's 2018 recruiting class
An update on Alabama's 2018 recruiting class.

Quote
-- Alabama currently has the No. 5 class in the country, according to 247Sports.com. It would take something of a miracle to overtake top-ranked Georgia. That would end the Crimson Tide's streak of seven straight No. 1 recruiting classes dating back to 2011.

-- The Tide signed 15 players in the early signing period. Saban on Dec. 20 said they can only take 23 in this class.

-- It was a big recruiting weekend for Alabama for the national championship celebration. A few of the top uncommitted players in the nation were spotted at Bryant-Denny Stadium including Patrick Surtain Jr. (five-star CB), his high school teammate Tyson Campbell (five-star CB), and Nicolas Petit-Frere (five-star OL).

A one-time Florida commit, Jacob Copeland is coming off a visit to Texas A&M. His trip to Alabama will be an interesting one, as the Tide are already considered the ever-so-slight favorite to land the four-star receiver. The weekend will be about erasing doubt from Copeland and making a lasting impression that will linger beyond his scheduled visit to Florida on Feb. 2. The Gators being gifted Copeland’s final visit shouldn’t be dismissed as insignificant, and it makes Nick Saban’s weekend task more difficult.

He visits this weekend.  4-star WR

There has been so much talk for such a long time that Patrick Surtain was leaning toward LSU, with its defensive back tradition in Baton Rouge and so many other factors playing in the Tigers’ favor. But this one is much closer than people think, and Alabama is not only a serious contender, it could be the team to beat after his visit to Tuscaloosa this past weekend. If the five-star cornerback picks Alabama, it would be another huge coup as the Crimson Tide continue to dominate college football. But if LSU can wrap up Surtain, then the Tigers have another potential superstar at cornerback and coach Ed Orgeron would notch a recruiting win over Nick Saban.

A late visit to Auburn could put the Tigers within striking distance, but this seems to be a two-team race between national powerhouses Clemson and Alabama. Clemson has been the favorite for a long while, and the five-star receiver took his official visit there during the season. The Tigers’ ability to crank out top-end wide receivers almost every year - plus a loaded quarterback group - can only help Clemson’s chances. But Alabama rarely loses the top-rated, in-state prospect (the last time it happened was 2012 when Jameis Winston
picked Florida State) so the Crimson Tide could never be counted out. On top of that, Ross had a great visit to Tuscaloosa this past weekend so Alabama is right there, even if Clemson has been the longtime front-runner.

Kayvon Thibodeaux, #1 DE recruit, #1 overall.  2019.

“It blew my mind. It exceeded all of my expectations,” Thibodeaux told SEC Country. “I wasn’t really too big on Alabama going into it, but they changed my mind. Before going, it just seemed like too much of a factory. They got the best guys. They didn’t turn these guys into big D-1 prospects. They just got the best guys. But now seeing it in person, I see that they pay attention to every little detail [to] make them better.”

Just ask the 65 who have been drafted since 2009.  Cool

Interesting info from Andrew Bone on Gant's decommitment. This was posted over at the Woolly, but no link.

Quote
"No surprise regarding his decommitment from Alabama on Sunday. I spoke with Gant on Sunday afternoon after he visited Alabama for A-Day. He said he did not speak to any Alabama coaches during the visit. Imagine how it may have been for him to take recent visits to Florida, Florida State and Miami- these schools trying hard to flip him. They spend as much time as possible with him. Then he goes to Alabama and doesn't speak to a single coach. Gant never spoke with Nick Saban regarding his decision in December. He committed only to former DBs coach Derrick Ansley. While he may rank high, he was not considered one of Alabama's top safety targets. Alabama does not plan to recruit Gant."

Sounds like he was recruiting himself.
