In a potentially game-changing moment for college athletics, the Chicago district of the National Labor Relations Board ruled on Wednesday that Northwestern football players qualify as employees of the university and can unionize.

NLRB regional director Peter Sung Ohr cited the players' time commitment to their sport and the fact that their scholarships were tied directly to their performance on the field as reasons for granting them union rights.

Chicago must be full of idiots. These players are volunteers and have had that made clear to them as a stipulation for playing football.

Here we go.

That can't be right, that's where the Obama's are from.

Northwestern has stated that they will drop football if necessary, and the Chicago NLRB will not be the final authority on this, so I really don't see this going anywhere.

True. Wow, though. What a drastic step to drop a football program, but I am with the university on this one.

Northwestern is a private university and just can not afford the insanity of a union, negotiating, expenses, etc. Plus, I doubt Northwestern football is making much money. Federal Courts will overrule this insanity.

This is the dumbest thing I have ever heard of. Only in the Obama Administration could this happen. The NLRB's job is to protect employees rights. Student athletes are not employees.

What about Title 9? The volleyball team will want to be in a union too.

Well you know what happens when a pea is dropped in the bucket, it grows. So here goes the end of college football. When one does it, they all do it. Who in Chicago has ever been to college much less played football? It never surprises me anymore. ROLL TIDE ROLL!

While the unions are still fairly strong up north I doubt there will be any rumblings of teams in the south unionizing.  Be really surprised if they do...

Well, if everything works out like the NW players want it too, they will always have this to look forward to.

Northwestern football players won the right to unionize on Wednesday, but the potential tax implications alone could immediately kill the idea.

Much of what was argued in the National Labor Relations Board testimony is in direct opposition to why scholarships aren't being taxed today.

"It appears like the case brought forward by the players focused on things other than the potential tax implications," said Garrett Higgins, a partner at O'Connor Davies in the firm's Exempt Organization Tax and Advisory Services group. "The fact that the players were not considered employees in the past is essentially the reason why their scholarship or parts of it weren't taxed before. The IRS may be able to make the argument that the scholarship is really payment for services, and therefore compensation, and is now taxable to the athlete.

Ooops!  2 + 2 = ?

Goodie.  Now the IRS will be chasing them.
Plus, since the court decided that they were more like employees than students, let's take away their degrees, free parking, free access to facilities, free tickets, free tattoos  , access to our coeds, ...

Yep! And at this point, they can't put the biscuits back in the can. I thought students at NW were smart. Doesn't look like they thought this through very well.
