Can Anyone Explain What Caused All These Crazy Threads?

I'm not a computer guy, but could this be some random thing that seeks out sites like this or would the person have to target us?

It was some crazy spammer/spambot.  I think I have deleted all of them now though.

Spambot, does that mean it was something done automatically and not a single individual who decided to "get" CRS? It there no protection against some type of automatic spam?

It is hard to stop spam, especially if there is a real person helping the spambot.  But they are just wasting their time, it didn't stay up for even 1 hour.

If Terrie had not come aboard last night, could the spam have damaged the site if it kept making posts, like an overheated car?

I don't know the answer to your question but I "THINK" it wouldn't have damaged the site.  I guess if it had been a continue slamming of posts, it could've crashed the site but I think it would take hundreds to do that?  Coach would KNOW though So I'm tossing it to him!

It couldn't do permanent damage, but in theory a bunch of spambots could launch what is called a denial of service attack.  Basically they just all jump on here at the same time and overwhelm the site so that it is too slow for real people.  But even this wouldn't do permanent damage.  But they would never do that unless the people behind them had a personal vendetta against us and wanted to cause trouble.  Typically a good spam bot will try to stay under the radar so that their spam doesn't get deleted.  The worst thing that might happen would be for them to post spam everywhere and make a big mess for us to have to come behind and clean up (i.e. delete), which is pretty much what happened with this incident.
