Bama basketball struggles with former player who stands behind Coach Grant

Andrew Steele's been through this before.

He was a freshman when the locals became restless in Mark Gottfried's last season as Alabama's basketball coach. That resignation came in late January of 2009 in a season ending with an 18-14 record.

I love both Steele's but his crimson glasses are blurring his vision. First of all, the writer's assertion about Gottfried is totally wrong. The natives did not get restless in his final season. They were restless for at least 3-5 years because he was producing average to mediocre teams and not going to the NCAA Tourney. Also, this statement by Steele is silly:

He points to the last two NIT trips (2010-11 and 2012-13) as examples of how close Alabama came to three consecutive NCAA appearances.

"If we made the tournament those last three years, the outlook would be extremely different going into this year," he said. "And I don't think people realized how close we were to actually breaking through. I think people don't think the program is where it should be right now, but it's a lot better than it was when he got there."

Making the NIT doesn't mean you're close to making the Tourney. He is reaching for some abstract justification for the lack of real achievement under Coach Grant. Concrete results are what count, not maybes, Unicorns, & Rainbows.

I think it's pretty accurate.   Gottfried made the NCAA Tournament 5 years in a row.    Then Bama was in the NIT the following year.  Bama went one season without any post-season play, and Gottfried was fired in the middle of the next season.  His two seasons with NC State he made the NCAA Tournament (Sweet 19 and Second Round).

I think it's pretty accurate.   Gottfried made the NCAA Tournament 5 years in a row.    Then Bama was in the NIT the following year.  Bama went one season without any post-season play, and Gottfried was fired in the middle of the next season.  His two seasons with NC State he made the NCAA Tournament (Sweet 19 and Second Round).

Gottfried's record declined steadily to the point he did not even make the NIT one year & got knocked out in the first round of another. He had become stale and there were several problems, such as no defense, poor outside shooting, no offensive scheme, no adjustments during the game, etc. He was left with some real talent at NC State. Let's evaluate him after 4 years there.
