Texas has offered its head coaching job to Louisville coach Charlie Strong, and he is expected to accept, a person familiar with the search told the Associated Press on Friday night.

Strong, though, told Louisville athletic director Tom Jurich on Friday night he has not accepted the job, Jurich told ESPN's Brett McMurphy. Strong wants to talk to Jurich and Louisville president James Ramsey on Saturday, another source told McMurphy.

Wow! I've been hearing that he would be at best a dark horse for the job.

He was one of 4 coaches on TX's short list.  Apparently Jimbo isn't interested, he just signed a contract extension.  Art Briles announced today he was staying at Baylor.  Click here for link

That leaves Charlie Strong and James Franklin.  I think CS is the stronger  candidate of the two.   And Franklin still has a football game tomorrow, so maybe Texas felt they needed to act now.

I am not overly surprised they went with him. I don't think any NFL coach was a possibility and was silly talk by their fans. Coaches with prickly personalities & huge egos would not have fit in well at Texas. I think Strong will be shocked when he finds out how much hobnobbing and glad handling he has to perform, not to mention the Longhorn Network.

Texas egos are so oversized. The fans think all they had to do was snap their fingers and they could have had Saban. Amazing arrogance.

Strong, 37-15 in four seasons at Louisville, including 3-1 in bowl games, will replace Mack Brown.

The 53-year-old Strong met this week with new Texas athletic director Steve Patterson about the coaching vacancy, but he wanted to wait until speaking directly with Jurich to accept Texas' offer. Jurich was on vacation in Colorado and weather problems made traveling back to Louisville difficult.

Done.  Expect a rocky series of upcoming years for Texas.

He's a great coach.
I don't think he's a great fit at Texas.  I can just imagine the 10-gallon hats pushed back on heads this morning!

I see what you're saying. Yeah, when things go bad, Petrino would be easier to throw under the bus. He's used to that.
