The Alabama men's basketball team is set to host the Maryland Terrapins in the quarterfinals of the 2013 National Invitation Tournament on Tuesday night in Coleman Coliseum. Tipoff between the top-seeded Crimson Tide and the No. 2 seed Terps is set for 6:30 p.m. CDT and will be televised on ESPN.

The winner of Tuesday's game advances to the semifinals, which will be held on April 2 in Madison Square Garden in New York City.

Maryland (24-12, 8-10 ACC) travels to Tuscaloosa for the NIT quarterfinals after winning games against Niagara (86-70) in the first round and Denver (62-52) in the second round. Both contests were played in College Park, Md.

The Terps are led by sophomore guard/forward Dez Wells, who enters the game at Alabama leading Maryland in scoring (13.2 ppg), second in assists (3.0 apg) and field goal percentage (.532) and is third in rebounding (4.9 rpg) and steals (33).

Seven-foot center Alex Len is second on the team in scoring (11.7 ppg), and leads Maryland in rebounding (7.7 rpg) and blocked shots (1.9 bpg).

Maryland started the season 13-1. They lost their opener to Kentucky and then won 13 straight. There was not a good team in that 13 game win streak. They went 11-11 after that. They had two wins over Duke and a win over NC St. They had bad losses to Va Tech (RPI 172), Ga Tech (142) and Boston College (108).

They were 18-3 at home, 3-7 on the road and 3-2 neutral. Their RPI is 61 and Alabama's is 59. Their SOS is 88 and ours is 87. On paper this game looks like a toss up with Bama getting a big edge for the home court.

Maryland has a 7' big man who averages 12 pts and 8 boards a game. He could cause us trouble.

Winner goes to New York.

Well I just believe our big men can out do their big men. We win a close one at home. RTR!

Maryland is 3rd in the country in rebounding. They shoot a better % than us on the season that equates to about a 7 point advantage per game over the Tide. But that can be made up with defensive pressure. Be assured they will go down low to Len early and often to try and exploit our weak spot.  But Jacobs can match their production in the lane if given the minutes. They shoot better than we do except for two things-- the Tide has been shooting better the last couple of weeks and the Tide defense will reduce their season average tonight. They can do this by collapsing the zone to limit the inside shooting, then keep a hand in Wells' face when they run their ball screens, quick hitters from inside out, or maybe even double zippers like FGC ran over San Diego State. Seth Allen scored 13 in Maryland's win over Denver. He broke his hand and will not play tonight. This is per one captioned photo I found in the UM twitter feed so TIFWIW.

He is out. He averages nearly 8 points a game but has been playing his best of the year lately.

Here is a article link.

I read a Bleacher Report--for lack of a better word,--report, that said the Maryland fans are the nastiest in college basketball. The article gave all kinds of examples of meanness,--including yelling "How's your Grandma" at a player shooting free throws. His Grandma had just died. Recordings on answ. mach about killing a players family, to Kansas St. throwing bananas at the University of Kansas team when they first had black players. But according to Bleacher Report, the University of Maryland takes the rudeness cake with among other things, a parody off the song Rock and Roll Part II, because at UM the right to yell "You Suck" at other fans is a right worth fighting for (one post game riot left Terrapins facing criminal charges).

Well I see some rudeness in fans but only one way to truly make kids behave. When they act like this, you give them a thorough whipping in front of the iron. When they leave crying then tell them next behave when you come to our house. RTR!

I agree that our defensive pressure will be the difference. If Jacobs & Randolph keep playing inside like they have been, we will be in good shape there. I am eager to see if Obasohan can continue his level of play.

Maryland has some size. The starters are 6-3, 6-5, 6-6, 6-8 and 7-1. They are a good rebounding team. We will need solid play from our big guys and we must stay out of foul trouble.

We need to follow standard operating procedures. We need to play defense and make them play at our pace. We do not want to get into a high scoring game. We need to get to the free throw line and hit our shots. Most importantly, we need to avoid a long offensive drought.

If we can hit some outside shots early, we might be able to loosen up their D and make them spread the floor. It will be interesting to see Jacobs dealing with their 7 footer. Also, I expect drives to the basket right at the 7 footer by Releford, Obasohan, & Randolph.

I've been trying to give the ESPN guys some slack for complimenting Gueye--early in the game. You give a kid a chance until he proves you wrong-- but enough is enough. These guys read off pre-printed cards as to scouting reports and tendencies. But this is ridiculous. Gueye is terrible at defense and even worse at offense. He has no businessw in this game and we are going to lose because of him taking PT from Jacobs. CAG's fault-- not 9'GB's.

Maryland shooting above their heads-- Bama shooting below. Rim change at half will even this out. Need to keep things kinda close. Another 3 by Cooper!
