During his annual appearance Monday at the Birmingham Tip-Off Club, Alabama coach Anthony Grant spent six minutes with the news media, nine minutes delivering a speech and 18 minutes answering questions from the audience.

“From where we were in November through our struggles in December to where we are now, we’ve gotten better as a basketball team,” Grant said in his speech of a 12-7 team that was 6-0 in November but 1-5 in December. “As a coach, that’s all I can ask. We have more room for improvement. …”

CAG:
Quote
“Releford’s the type of point guard that’s an attacking point guard. He’s probably at his best when he’s in a broken-floor situation, when he’s in the open floor out in transition. … He’s probably one of the elite finishers in college basketball. Where he is starting to get more comfortable is with his perimeter jump shot. He’s beginning to understand that the work he’s put in over the course of his career is paying dividends, and it’s OK to take the 15-foot as opposed to trying to get the 3-footer. He’s growing as a player in that. Also in understanding how to take advantage of his teammates and do the things we’re asking him to do. … He’s got the ability to score the basketball, and we certainly need that, along with Lacey and a couple of other guys, but we don’t just need scorers. We need playmakers, where they create opportunities for the other guys in terms of what the defense gives us. You’re going to have certain opponents where their game plan is to limit the opportunities that Releford has in terms of what he wants to do and how he wants to impact the game, so he’s got to be able to do other things.”
This is what I referred to as playing at 90mph. It is not just Releford that responds to the broken floor.

I think we play better defense and get more turnovers in the half court defense than we do full court pressure. We get beat too often for layups when we press. Our guards know how to fast break when we get a steal.

Arkansas comes to Coleman on Thursday night. Both teams will be going 90mph. That should be interesting.

I'm sure CAG and company have studied the USCe v. Arky film from Saturday.
