Most of the news coming out of Alabama’s A-Day spring game last weekend centered around the fact that A.J. McCarron and Phillip Sims are apparently dead even in the race for the starting quarterback job.

There’s some talk that they may even split snaps next season.

I still think McCarron will be the guy, although props go out to Sims for making it a legitimate race.

Clearly, Alabama has two guys at that position the team feels it can win with, and that’s always a luxury in this league.

I gave the nod to Sims because of the way he handled the pass rush. He would step forward in the pocket during a rush to find an open receiver or be able to run the ball where McCarron wanted to move backwards with no chance of finding an open receiver or eluding the rush. Unless McCarron changes, he will be sacked many times this year.

I like Sims better too. I have posted a quote from the Bama Sports Report that states how I feel better than I can. I have also posted the link.

Quote:
If pressed to make a judgment solely on what I saw on Saturday, I would lean towards Sims. Not only did McCarron have two turnovers (1 INT, 1 goal line fumble) to Sims having just one (INT), Sims just looked better to me. The biggest difference was his willingness to stay within the pocket and step up to make throws. McCarron quickly bailed on the pocket and tried to out run SEC linebackers to the edge. The result of that was McCarron being sacked 6 times to Sims just once. Both guys made some great throws, and both guys made some poor ones. McCarron's best two throws came to Trent Richardson - one on a wheel route down the sideline and another on a crossing pattern that resulted in the game's sole passing touchdown. Sims did not have any one singular eye-popping play, though each time he stepped into the pocket and showed off his arm it was quite impressive.

You know I am not a Holder of either one. Fla. won a N.C. with 2 QB system and I think we can too with them both being as good as they are. RTR!

Cecil Hurt: Saban Credits fans for A-day's Success.

Blake Sims had a good day too.

Saban didn’t elaborate on the quarterback play, and the ultimate outcome of the competition between McCarron and Sims will be a closely-guarded state secret until September, one suspects. But Saban did return to the play of another freshman quarterback, Blake Sims.

“He’s our third quarterback right now,” Saban said. “He actually threw the ball better and played the position better than we had anticipated. He does some things that we didn’t (show) in the A-Day game that will give an added dimension to our offense.”

I was very impressed with Blake as well. He looked very natural at qb, with that I mean that when plan A didn't work he had a plan B that worked for positive yardage. He may get a lot more playing time than us fans might realize right now.
