mixed results on the FD.  As I feared, the cherty clay crap does not filter, so the swale in the back yard filled up with water like before I dug the ditch two years ago. 

So, I will install a sump, in the rain and muck.  Cheesy

Here's some before/right now

There is no photo of the lake, the first thing I did was dig an access spot to the drain to see if it was working, sure enough, about 2" down the soil was dry.   Once I got down there it all drained out very quickly.  Now I will install a T and stick up and fill the hole the with gravel.  Then some day I will practice grate installation on it.

Just thinking out loud here, but couldn't you just fill the sump hole with gravel and then a couple inches of normal top soil that drains well?  Then you wouldn't need a grate in the middle of your yard.  You might have to make the sump hole a little bigger to get enough flow.  Once the grass grows back it would be an invisible grate (patent pending).

Not a universal fix, but in problem areas you can add sand to break up that heavy clay.
