I'm sure bummed this morning, fellas.  I just learned a dear friend from my 20s and 30s passed away this past Sunday.  He was diagnosed with a rare liver condition 5 or 6 years ago, and he didn't speak all that freely about it.  We kept in touch a couple times a month via text messages (though we rarely saw each other anymore), and he had not mentioned being in a low state.   It was a real punch in the gut finding out about his passing at age 46.

Sorry HL, that is indeed quite depressing.  Sad

Praying for you all HL. That is one instant that proves we better be ready to meet death because we don't know what second we are gonna leave here. God Bless my friend. RTR!

Hope you are doing good...

Very sorry to hear that HL I lost my best friend in this world a few years ago to a brain tumor. It does indeed suck.  Sad

Not much of a transition from HL's loss, but here it is.

UPDATE:  We had storms and 2" of rain.  But all is well.

Thanks for the humor, Chech.  Thanks to the rest of you for the condolences.  It's been a sad day for me.  Ben and I had been talking about getting together for a meal for the last several months and never did it.   I'm kicking myself that I didn't work harder to make that happen.

He "owed" me a meal from the Dodgers beating the Braves in 2020, and I owed him a meal from last year's playoffs.  I sure wish we could pay off those bets tomorrow.

I've started packing for Yellowstone.  Not leaving until next week, but I've got a list of 500+ items to organize.  Taking 3 flyrods, my inflatable 8' boat (fits into car), food (no grocery anywhere near my cabin), 4 coats, bear spray (2 bottles), 3 pairs of boots...

Additional suggestions?

What type of foodstuff do you take?  Canned goods and jerky?  Will the cabin have internet access?

Sorry, HL, but I just now saw your questions.  And apparently you didn't see my note of condolence.  So sorry about your friend.  Nothing replaces a friend, nothing.

Yellowstone (I stay just outside the NE Gate of YNP): I leave the cabin before daybreak each day (usually about 4am during May) to get to the wolves and hear them howl before sunrise.  I often stay out all day, then return to the cabin about 8-9pm to sleep.  Sometimes I return during midday for errands or to nap.

Food: Mostly I pack nuts and snack cereal (things that fit into a backpack and don't weigh much).  I often set up away from the road, and if there are bears or wolves in view I might stay right through mealtime.  So I pack enough to get by.  I buy groceries in Cody, WY on the way through it: lunchmeat, bread, cheese, potatoes, etc to make meals.

Canned goods/jerky:  No.  I used to take jerky, but I spent too much time with dental floss along the trails (or without floss - ugh).  Canned goods weigh too much.  There's a restaurant in the little town (very little - maybe 10 year-round residents) where I stay, and a gift shop with some food items (loaf of bread is $8).  See photo of Silver Gate below.

Cabin has VERY LIMITED, POOR wifi.  Just enough to get messages and read updates.  No cell phone coverage in Silver Gate, MT.  Mountains tower over the town, so no way to use a phone there.  Some homes have hard lines for emergencies.  Fortunately there is one area of the park that I frequent where I can get cell service from a hilltop.  I usually call LF from there.

Have you ever had bear meat, Chech? You ought to catch you one and you'd be set for the whole trip.

I noticed last year you did little or no fishing. What's your game plan this trip?

Morning Ricky.  Thanks for the wishes.

2, I've never had bear meat.  I've eaten muskrat, raccoon, opossums, squirrels, nutria, coots, songbirds (bb guns and campfires), ducks, geese, deer, elk, bison... but never bear.  If you get some we'll try it.

I didn't bother taking fish pics last year.  Plus, fishing last year was hampered because my fishing buddy didn't arrive in Yellowstone me until late in June.  It's dangerous to fish the lakes alone.  We fished just 2 days in Hebgen Lake.  We used to both stay in a West Yellowstone motel, just 10 minutes from the lake, so we fished every day the weather allowed.  On bad-weather days we went into the park and watched wolves and bears.  I found I liked watching wildlife more than everyday fishing, so I moved to the other side of the park and rented a cabin.  I can fish around the cabin (mostly when the river-levels lower during August) or in Lamar Valley in the park.  During June I drive 2 hours to West Yellowstone to fish Hebgen Lake.  It's a long drive, and weather dependent.  I'm packing my boat, so I'll certainly be fishing Hebgen; probably middle-late June.  I'll give you a report.
