This photo may be a fluke, but look at AJ's grip.  Looks like he doesn't (always) grip the seam.
What's your take on this?  I was better at catching than throwing.

I played QB in H.S. and it was so very hard to throw without being on the seam. I couldn't apply the zip I wanted to, or have the control I wanted in delivering to the point. JMHO. RTR!

Maybe it was one bad pass. I never played the position, but it seems like it would be hard to throw the ball with any kind of accuracy or strength on the ball with that kind of grip.

I noticed the grip too, particularly his thumb.  I wonder if that is normal.  Maybe hscoach will stop by in a day or two and educate us.  I'm sure he will be by after A-day if not before.

Those all look pretty good.  It could have been an issue with the exchange from center.  I never played QB, but I think the center is supposed to turn the ball so that the laces are facing up when they hit they QB's hand.  As for the thumb, it looks like maybe he is in the process of releasing the ball.  All of the other pictures look perfect.

Those look great. He has such a firm but controlling grip. I think he and Sims will throw many great passes and a few bad ones. RTR!

It could be a quick throw where the QB throws quickly and grip is not a huge concern.  However, the others look more like the grip taught.  I have heard of QB's who don't like to grip the laces.

Thanks general and hscoach. Like I said, I never played QB, so those photos and the later comments helped out my perspective.

Hey hscoach, speaking of the laces, I have always wondered if gripping the laces made much of a measurable difference in accuracy and distance.

I have only heard or people who don't like to grip the laces, never coached one.  I myself think the grip feels totally wrong without gripping the laces.

Hey hscoach, I played QB at Ranburne back in the late 60's early 70's and I could not grip the ball well enough w/o getting the seams. JMHO. RTR!

I can see that. Just in the neighborhood games and games in school during PE it never felt right if my hand wasn't on the laces. Maybe its a psychological thing for some.

Hey ricky, didn't know you played QB in HS. What kind of offense did y'all typically run?

okay, I know, this thread is about QB, and not kicker, but still...

And FWIW, yes grip the laces!

Some QBs, Namath comes to mind, have hands so big they go all around the ball. Hope that this somehow helps.

We run an I-formation with a wingback. You could do several things out of that formation. RTR!
