If we are going to morally justify hiring Petrino, why not just hire Saban away from uat?

I can guarantee you that they would be far more worried about that than us hiring Petrino.  Just go offer him 7 or 8 (or 10 or 12) million to switch to Auburn.  Even if it fails it will end up costing uat a whole lot more after the bidding war smoke cleared to retain him...which would at least hurt their pocketbook a little.

Petrino is a dumb idea.  He's dooked in the punch bowl everywhere he's been. There is NO reason to believe that he wouldn't do it again here.

If we feel like we can't get along with Chizik it makes no sense to me for us to hire anyone less than the best available (or the best that we can make available, starting with Saban), and that's not Petrino.  Pay them whatever it costs.  If we're not willing to do that I suggest we stick with Chizik.

If we were willing to double his salary he would start packing right now.  Cause that's how he rolls.  But that's not what would happen.  We would offer, uat would counter, and in the end they would end up contracted to him for 10 or 12 million per year.  The downside of that is that we would never be able to get rid of him there.

I'm with you zone. Unless we are getting a guaranteed proven head coach ie. Fisher, Saban, Carroll. (I don't think any of them would even consider it). We are better off standing pat for the next couple years.

I definitely don't think Petrino is the answer at all. I didn't think that before he got fired and definitely not now.

I went off yesterday after a few drinks but I do believe Chizik can turn it around. It's just that 3 plus years of this effort on defense really makes you question that belief.

Some of you guys are as bad as georgia fans. Chizik may be a good Christian man, but that doesn't mean squat if multiple players are getting arrested every year. If we're competing for the Fulmer cup every year, I at least want us winning some football games.

These guys are entertaining.  

Do they really think...
1) Saban would jump to Aubland if offered $10M?  Money can't buy you love.
2) CNS could turn Aubland into Alabama?  He's good, but some things aren't possible.
3) Chizik is "all in"?  He may leave before they make him go.

I have to say if I was Chizik I would think about my next stop. Auburn won 1 NC game and they think they can be like us and expect to win them every year. Waaahaaaaa, never going to happen. I knew the Falcon defense wasn't all that great when VanGorder was there and now auburn ain't either. RTR!

Folks, the only way any of this could have been avoided was to have hired a coach who had a well documented track record of winning and recruiting.

We got a coach who was an assistant for years, his first real gig at Auburn, and even then our defense had a ton of CTT influence. He moves to U of Tex and by the grace of God they have a freak named Vince Young. That defense didn't even come close to stopping USC the year they won the BCS. Their defense looked a ton like ours did in 2010. Then that coach goes to ISU and flounders there, then he comes to Auburn.

He seems to recruit well and in 2010 we won it all, but again we had our own freak named Cam Newton.  Again the recruiting seemed to be there but discipline issues seem to crop up, plus there are other questions about recruiting "ethics".

LSU hired Les Miles who was a solid coach at OSU and learned how to coach at Michigan. Bama hired Nick Saban. Florida hired Urban Meyer. Ark hired Petrino. All of these guys were winners wherever they were except maybe the NFL.

We hired an untested guy whose only successes were 2004 undefeated season as DC and BCS title as DC. He wins a BCS title with a freak on offense and a monster on the DL but nothing else.

I'm not saying he should go yet, but if we do not improve, I would start "searching" for another coach before the end of the season.

Saban has worked no miracles there, he has just recruited the very best talent and shored up their fundamentals. There is no innovation, no real strategy, but he is a great coach for his recruiting, his preparation, and his reliance on fundamentals.

He recruits guys more polished than others so he has to do less work. Physically they are already very solid, mentally already better developed, but all he does is add some more strength and some refinement and they look like all world. Few true Freshman start at Bama because they are so deep. They are slowly integrated unless they are a great talent already. We do not have the more polished guys because these guys are not abundant.
